With the sheer amount of anticipation 2.1 gained, it’s security improvements, bug fixes and more, when it finally did hit last Friday, people were starting to think this was an update Apple just ‘got right’, and in some cases, they did – In others, not so much. All attention has now shifted onto the growing list of third party applications which have been ‘broken’ by updating their iPhone’s software to 2.1 …
Complaints range from applications crashing, to sound effects becoming distorted, save functions becoming inoperative and even on some titles, random freezes.
The list currently stands at:
[Last updated 15.09.08 @ 21.37PM]

Tube Status: (random crashes/exit to home screen, works fine for some)
Now I think you’ll all agree, that is one hell of a list of application issues. As to what is causing most of these issues? – we don’t yet know, however according to RPGGuy of Toucharcade.com:
“I have found that the 2.1 firmware no longer plays 8 bit sounds correctly.”
It’s obvious the ‘bugs’ within iPhone OS are far from resolved. Although the latest update to the software fixes most known bugs, as well as provides a relatively stable platform that at least we can now use from day to day, 2.1 seems to take a step back in other aspects.
One developer, ZEN Studio’s of which 2.1 broke their ‘Pinball Rollercoaster’ title, stated a fix was on the way:
“Thank you for taking the time to write to us!
We have refined our physics engine over the last months, and the new version of the game (2.1) is at Apple for a week now to be released – the new version is with higher framerate, more responsive flipper arms and upgraded graphics.
This is free for our present customers of course, hopefully by the time you read this message it is already available )
Thank you for your feedback and understanding!”

Yet again, the price for quality bug fixes has resulted in Apple messing up another aspect of the software’s architecture. Hopefully Apple pushes out 2.1.1 soon which should rectify these quite major issues.
