Need to record notes on your iPhone and then have the ability to wirelessly sync them to your nearby Mac? If you answered yes, you need this …

[Update 02.10.08 @ 14.16am]
Polar Bear Farm recently renamed ‘Dictaphone’ to ‘Record’. Presumably this was because there were a few applications on the store, for example iDictaphone [App Store] with too similar names.

[Update 25.09.08 @ 02.29am]
We received recognition from Polar Bear Farm (the devs) tonight!

“Hi Arron,

Thank you for taking the time to make such a thorough and polished review. It’s great to see having put in a decent amount of time to produce a polished voice recorder, that some people have taken notice. The app has done well in Europe, sitting at number 2 in France, and in Australasia however has not yet broken the top 100 in the US. We hope that with a few updates and some clever marketing we can eventually compete head on with the Recorder app.

We are continually updating all of our apps and love getting feedback, even if it’s bad, to help us improve.
`
We would love to potentially add a link to your review from our website and even possibly on the app store description itself. We really appreciate the time you have put in to the review and welcome comments, feedback and reviews in the future.”

Original Article:

Dictaphone [App Store] developed by Polar Bear Farm Ltd is a fully equipt dictaphone for iPhone.
No adapters required.

Using the built in microphone in iPhone Classic and 3G, Dictaphone records voice messages and surrounding sounds clearly and crisply.

Using Dictaphone
The first thing you’ll notice about Dictaphone is it’s extremely well designed interface. Unlike most developers on the store to date, Polar Bear Farm actually look like they thought about the UI on this one. Falling in line with iPhone’s sleek look, and delicious UI, Dictaphone is one application which doesn’t look out of place.

‘Sinking’ your Recordings
Once you have made a recording, Polar Bear Farm has something real special for you. Dictaphone supports wireless syncing of your recordings to your Mac or PC, through their bare bones software ‘Sink’ available here for Mac and here for Windows. To use the software on Windows systems, you must first install ‘Bonjour’ available here

To sync your recordings:

1. Tap the sync icon within Dictaphone on iPhone (Note: You must be connected to Wifi).

2. Open ‘Sink’ on your Mac or PC …

3. Touch ‘Add Computer’ and enter the ‘Passcode’ into Sink.

4. Find your iPhone under ‘Devices’ and hit ‘Sync’.

Once you hit Sync, any recent recordings will appear in ‘Sink’. Simply click the recording you wish to hear and hit the play control on the Quicktime plugin (as below)

Location API
Dictaphone also takes advantage of the built in iPhone 3G GPS module, by offering to tag your location to your recording! – Pretty damn hot if you ask me. I’m sure some hardcore bird watchers will appreciate this, recording a sighting with a location attached.

Price
At 0.59p, Dictaphone looks stunning and is actually very useful. There are a lot of applications currently on the store which I just couldn’t say that about, even if I wanted to. Dictaphone shines.

Improvements
Dictaphone on iPhone looks stunning, but thier ‘Sink’ software is another story – It really is the least they could offer, in a program. It syncs your recordings. It’s not flashy, and it does it well, but I just can’t help but think how even more awesome this application would be, if Polar bear Farm actually tried with their end user Mac/PC software. Namely in this case, Sink.

I’m Looking forward to seeing what titles are next from this emerging developer …

Rating: 8.7/10 (Functional, Well Designed, Recommended)

App Store: Dictaphone
