Fring – The fairly popular peer-to-peer mobile VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) client has finally hit the App Store. Checkout my thread over at Mac Rumors, or hit the jump from more details …

[Update 04.10.08 @ 00.17am GMT]

According to numerous readers including Brock (comment), it seems you don’t need these ‘Skype Credits’ after all.

“After creating a free fring account, simply hit the “Dialer” tab on the bottom of the app’s screen, and dial the number you would like. Alternatively, you can go to you buddy list, click on a buddy, hit call, and then you can place a CALL FOR FREE.”

[Update 03.10.08 @ 23.09pm GMT] [Deemed Incorrect]

As expected, Fring for iPhone only enables users to contact other Fring user’s. You cannot dial landlines or mobiles of which don’t own a Fring account. It is noted in order to use Fring as a VoIP service, you are required to buy Skype talk credits. Credits must be bought directly from Skype.com and are not available for purchase through Fring.

Original Article:

It’s finally here, Fring [App Store]. The application which was rumored not to be coming due the SDK issues. Steve later stated that VoIP applications for both iPhone and iPod touch would be allowed over a Wifi network, however he stated VoIP over the cellular network was in breach of AT&T and o2 terms and conditions, and therefore was prohibited.

Details are still sketchy, until people (including us) have had chance to survey the application in it’s fullest form, although we do know that Fring for iPhone supports:

Ӣ VoIP (Voice) Calls over WiFi
Ӣ Instant Messaging
Ӣ Integrated dynamic contact list Ӭwith real-time contact availability
Ӣ SIP integration
Ӣ Multiple Connection types

Fring also supports the highly popular VoIP service Skype. Essentially this application allows the phoning of and interaction with people through various well known services, and because it uses Wifi, you won’t eat into those sometimes precious monthly minutes.

Having not tested the application myself yet, it has unclear whether credits have to be purchased in order to use the application’s services. I’ll have more information shortly. Meanwhile …

    CAN CALL FOR FREE:

It looks like while some are saying that credits have to be bought in order to make VoIP calls, they are in fact wrong. After creating a free fring account, simply hit the “Dialer” tab on the bottom of the app’s screen, and dial the number you would like. Alternatively, you can go to you buddy list, click on a buddy, hit call, and then you can place a CALL FOR FREE.

    Not bad, eh?…

Not bad at all, thanks for the info! I think people (including me) are getting their wires crossed somewhere.

    I will correct the article.
