In a shock move, Apple rival Microsoft yesterday released their Seadragon technology onto the iPhone. Based on Ajax technologies and bringing deep-zoom, the app is designed for making viewing enormous (high resolution) photos, a breeze. The app comes with some default sample content to give you an idea of what it does, but with MS’s own software tools, you can have a go at creating your own content for it too!
With MS releasing Seadragon from Microsoft’s Livelabs, many users are now speculating this is the start of something great. Something revolutionary in itself. Finally, Microsoft has realised and taken note of the potential and market appeal of the iPhone – and not just in the consumer market either – the enterprise too.
With this first step, the second won’t be too far behind, with discussion and rumor now falling to Microsoft’s own web-version of Office making it’s debut on the App Store! Now that would be one Microsoft app I wouldn’t reject, ever – There’s no doubting MS Office completely blows iWork out of the water, for most office tasks.
“The aim of Seadragon is nothing less than to change the way we use screens, from wall-sized displays all the way down to cell phones, so that graphics and photos are smoothly browsed, regardless of the amount of data or the bandwidth of the network.”
Microsoft currently have 3 other projects live on Livelabs; Thumbtack, Photosynth and Web Sandbox. With the successful debut of one product, and this being the Microsoft we all know and love, its only natural to assume they won’t be stopping at Seadragon.
