Background
If you’ve heard of the application MagicPad by Proximi [App Store], you may of noticed the application is the first of it’s kind to enable copy and paste on iPhone, the problem being of course this application, because of the SDK, can only offer it within it’s own environment, meaning copy and paste outside of the MagicPad application, it seemed, was impossible in-line with Apple’s iPhone SDK regulations …

Zac White of Oklahoma University has since taken this basic framework and enhanced it to work within the SDK regulations and make available copy and paste, system-wide, on the iPhone.

So how exactly has he achieved this?
Zac explained that developer’s general outlook on the word ‘sand-boxed’ was skewed, meaning they thought they couldn’t write outside of that sand-boxed environment. He explained that developers can write into their application folders quite easily, and you can read into other application’s folders, meaning you can copy from your application, and paste into any 3rd-party application on iPhone.

To Copy – You write to your application folder
To Paste – You read other application folders for clipboard items, and sort by date / time / type

OpenClip.ORG
With his findings, Zac has opened a open-source, non-profit organization called OpenClip, dedicated to providing developers with the open-source framework needed to implement this into their applications, and in the video above, you see just how effective and easily implemented this framework can be, for iPhone (I so want that pre-release version of WordPress!).

Limitations
Zac also explains the current limitations of the adoption of OpenClip for iPhone stating that in order for Apple-built applications to use OpenClip, Apple would have to support it whole-heartedly, something of which Apple has yet to comment on.

Act Now
If your a developer, visit Zac White at OPENCLIP.ORG to find out how to implement this into your application from today!

And If you have any questions as to the nature of this framework, you can e-mail Zac at:

The Future …
Zac outline’s he is working on a basic ‘search’ application which should hit the store in about 10-15 days, and will actively demonstrate the functionality of OpenClip for iPhone.
