A Brief Look at Space Ninja [Video]

The first of the major titles to mark the first day of a new year. Somewhat hyped, we thought we’d take a look at Space Ninja, the new (entirely tilt-based) shooter from Jormy Games.

From it’s truly retro-styled graphics, to it’s enthralling game play, I have to say Space ninja didn’t disappoint. You are a ‘Space Ninja’ in the year 2566 AD. Stranded in outer space, your aim is to reach Jupiter and deliver a package of great importance to the Horatio Military Base. However, this task won’t be as easy as you think. Your departure from Earth caused the sentry defense systems to start attacking you. Avoiding obstacles just like a ninja should, you will battle through to keep your package in tack, and arrive to the base on time.

See it in Action:

Control of your space ninja is carried out by tilting your device in the direction you wish for it to move. Usually users seeing a game entirely tilt-based would think there should be an option to switch to control-by-touch, but seriously? – It wouldn’t suit this title. The only caveat we can think to mention about this way of control is you’ll lose the right to lie down while playing this – but hey, play it while your sat up, and Jormy have got it spot on as far as the controls go.

Slo-Mo
The supernatural power every ninja should have .. the ability to slow down time itself. While in game, touch the screen at any point and you’ll go into slow motion. You’ll find this handy for dodging and wavering objects from by-the-skin-of-your-teeth distances.

Visuals
Retro. Retro. Retro. Not straight green lines retro, but a more ‘contemporary’ retro. A more visually polished retro. The game’s backdrop consists of that ‘white line ‘hyperspace effect’ while the more foreground objects just float past you. You are actually stationary, it’s the background which moves behind you – but don’t let that put you off, as the effect created sees you moving through outer space.

Price
Well it’s not 59p, nor is it £1.19 or even £1.79, so at £2.39 a pop some may be put off instantly, however, don’t be. After playing Space Ninja for about 3 hours yesterday, trying to complete the 4th or 5th mission (Yes, I am THAT bad), I can honest say the game is worth it’s price-tag.

Extras
Finally there are a few things which you probably wouldn’t expect about Space Ninja, the one that stands out for us is whenever you ‘Fail’ (which happened quite a lot with me trialling it) you have the option to save a reply video of your entire previous game play. This is great for saving those ‘just-have-to-see-again’ moments, during your full on ninjaness.

Overall
If your a Space invaders kinda-guy and love a good, solid shooter you can sink your teeth into, Space Ninja is definitely worth a look. To quote from one of our Twitter followers @istopmotion:

“Do you like the game as much as I do? I love it! I bet it’ll hit the top 25 games soon :D”

All we can say to that is; Lets hope it does, as it definitely deserves to.
