Cubit from Inkling Games is described as a “3D puzzle game with a 2D twist” and “quite different from the typical puzzle games that one finds on the iPhone”. So with these claims in mind I delved into to see what it was all about.
In each level you are given a grid that measures 3x3x3 and the object is to move the available cubes around to light each of the numbers placed around the board. This is achieved by positioning the squares so that each number is bordered by the corresponding number of squares (so every number “1” on the board must be bordered by one cube).
Given such a simple premise you may expect this game to be a simple little time killer but far from it. The board is in 3D (with the aid of a 2D view of the ”˜Front’, ”˜Top’ and ”˜Side’ views) and the cube’s cast shadows on the corresponding walls and aid you in completing the puzzle. The puzzle is completed once every number is illuminated.
The graphics are simple and crisp, with a polished look that shows that time what spent to make them so, from the crumpled paper background to the shading on the cubes. This game looks good from every angle.
Why every angle? Well let’s not forget this game is in 3D and you can move the cubes in every direction. Controls are intuitive and within seconds of playing I was already flicking the cubes around the board trying to solve the puzzle. Don’t like the view of the playing board, simply drag it into another position, great for spotting why a particular number isn’t lit.
This game boasts 100 levels through five progressively difficult level settings this is by no means a quick and easy game as some of puzzles even in Novice mode can prove a challenge. However, fear not, if you are stuck on a level and in danger of hurling you iDevice across the room, simply remember to hit the option button and skip to the next level. This is a great feature that I’d like to see in more games, there’s nothing better for making me lose interest in a game than to end up stuck on some level for any period of time. The game also comes with an integrated twitter feed allowing you to brag to the world about your accomplishments.
However, I did keep coming across an issue whereby the game would exit after completing a level. It also fails to recognise that the level had been completed so you have to work over. Whether this is an issue with my iPhone 2G or not I don’t know but I’m sure the developers are working towards fixing this bug as it can be most infuriating to complete a level and then be booted out, especially as the only way to fix this problem is to reset my iphone.
But if that problem can be resolved in an update this is certainly an interesting little puzzler, easy to pick up, fiendishly difficult to finish. Oh, and there’s a Lite version if you fancy a try before you buy. Worth a Look at this point, but if the bug’s can be resolved then this could get an upgrade to Recommended.
