Zombieville USA

Zombieville USA is side-scrolling zombie slaughter in its purest, most simple form. If you’re a casual gamer looking for some quick fun, this is great news. But fear not, hardcore gamers – there’s something here for you too.

The game is a side-scrolling shooter where you move a man either left or right and shoot at the incoming zombies that appear from either side of you. Really, it’s that simple. Throw in multiple weapons, upgrades, different types of zombies, an unlimited amount of replay value and levels, and you’ve got a great game on your hands for both the casual and hardcore audience.

You press either the left or right arrow to navigate, and the red (shoot) or green (melee) button to dismantle the incoming hordes of zombies. Gameplay is extremely cerebral, which can be either good or bad, depending on how you look at things. There are three difficulty modes for you to choose from, ranging from ‘Easy’ to ‘Insane’.

At the beginning, the gameplay feels a little slow, but as you start to earn money to upgrade your weapons, different types of zombies appear (ranging from tough, slow zombies to speedy and weak ones), and the difficulty ramps up, you’ll start having more fun than you could expect with such simple gameplay mechanics.

Things getting a little hectic? Tap one of the doors on the houses to hop in and replenish ammunition. Getting a little claustrophobic? Use the melee attack to create some space. Is your pistol losing its effectiveness? Upgrade it to a Desert Eagle version. Mika Mobile takes a simple formula and adds more to it. And I have to say, the formula works. The graphics are spot-on. I would have liked to see some variation in the zombie body types and deaths, but everything flows together and nothing seems out of place. The sound is great as well, save a little redundancy in the background music.

A local ‘Records’ section is kept, which is a nice way to keep track of your best runs. A lack of an online high score board was slightly disappointing, but it’s excusable. If you’re still having trouble with the difficulty of the game (it’s quite challenging) there is an option to choose from having one to five lives. You can also switch between a ‘New’ and ‘Classic’ control scheme. The gameplay is extremely simple, but a tutorial video is provided just in case.

For $1.99, Zombieville is worth the price tag for anyone looking for some quick fun, or a good challenge. There’s plenty to keep you interested here for a good amount of time, the options are great, and the game looks and sounds fantastic. A high quality title with great polish.

Still on the fence? There’s a lite version of the game available in the App Store.
