Intro

We have a brand new sponsor, Chillingo! Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!

This week has been extremely quiet on the App Store. Even though one of the most awaited games of the year in Plants vs Zombies arrived, I literally saw more previews than games released this week. After looking through this weeks releases I found hardly any titles to include in this weeks post. The good news though is the handful of games I found are definitely of high quality and you will enjoy them… if you can get away from Plants vs Zombies to try them!

Plants vs Zombies – $2.99

Plants vs Zombies has received a cult following and had me interested in buying this title immediately… and I had absolutely no clue what the game was even about! My reasoning for buying this game is that it is made by PopCap Games, therefore it must be good. You know the hype for a game is massive when it can reach number 1 and stay there for multiple days, plus costing more than $0.99. Anyhow I bought this game and found out that it is a seemingly simple castle defense game where you set out to use plants to protect a house from an onslaught of evil zombies.

Now this game is quite funny, just looking at the help screen will show you that. But when it comes down to the actual gameplay you won’t feel the full effect of this title until you breeze through a few levels. The aim of the game is to stop zombies by stopping them in five rows of grass using an array of plants to help you. As you get further through the game strategies need to be used as you have to carefully place different plant types to counteract the many zombies coming towards you. This is an extremely fun and addictive game that no short review can describe how good it is. Just pick this up, seriously.

Vancouver 2010 – $2.99

Vancouver 2010, the Official Game of the Winter Olympics is what appears to be the downfall of Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Now removed from the App Store to avoid confusion).  What we have in it’s place is the winter version of Playman’s Track & Field, an arcade athletics game that using very easy controls to play a variety of events. Vancouver 2010 is much the same but obviously has different events in Freestyle Moguls, Snowboard Cross, Biathlon, Speed Skating and Cross Country Skiing. For those players of the previous title, this is quite a bit harder.

Vancouver 2010 uses buttons on the left and right side of the screen that you have to tap with them alternating from side to side to gain speed. If you muck up then you lose speed. This is the main method from Track & Field but in Vancouver they have added tilt controls in the Snowboard Cross and Holding Buttons in the speed skating and Moguls. I believe that the right improvements have been made to this game to make it good enough for previous owners and new players alike. Good pick-up for the Olympics.

B-Boy Beats – $2.99

Once again another interesting music game has made it onto this list. As you will have a hard time releasing the classic tapping game anymore developers are forced to find new and interesting ways to make their game. B-Boy Beats is all about stepping to the beat with tracks of the same genre as Hip-Hop All Star, a previously released title. This game features heaps of songs by well known DJ’s and Rap artists in a challenging yet quite fun career mode.

You must tap to the beat by tapping and holding beats as they appear on the screen. You can only let your finger off if the same colour beat appears. It sounds easy but is actually incredibly hard as you get tempted to use a single finger to tap all the beats. It will take a lot of self restraint to play this game, but once you have mastered using multiple fingers then this game isn’t overly difficult. The career mode is pretty good and well set out to keep you coming back for hours. Music fans, especially of more hip-hop music will enjoy this game.

Other Notable Releases this week Include:

Drift Sumi-e by Objectify

Catacombs by InMotion Software

Brothers In Arms 2 – Gameloft

Stay tuned next week for the twentieth installment of ‘The Week That Was’. If you have any suggestions to improve the segment please either email me at damon@razorianfly.com or submit a comment below. Thanks! 😀
