If you’re tired of using Mobile Safari or another app store browser alternative to view the web on your iPhone or iPod touch, things might just be starting to get interesting …
Demoed back in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Opera Mini is an alternative multi-touch browser for the iPhone and iPod touch which boasts a few new features .. and today, its been submitted to Apple for approval.
As clearly noted by Engadget though, it is unlikely to see the light of day .. and here’s why. The multi-touch version of Opera Mini relies on Opera’s servers to render and compress pages before sending them back to the iPhone for display. This means that unlike Mobile Safari and other browsers currently available on the store, there’s no code interpretation being done by the software on the actual iPhone. This is deemed a big no no by Apple and the current SDK development guidelines.
Which begs the question whether Opera themselves see any chance of this software hitting the app store, or if this is just a huge publicity stunt. Opera yesterday released this video detailing the new mobile browser, as well as showing off a side-by-side comparison of page load times. Give it a watch below!
If Apple do approve Opera Mini for iPhone, the browser is expected to be blazing fast, delivering pages 5x faster than Mobile Safari can on the iPhone 3GS. Let the waiting officially .. begin!
