Zinio – 50,000 Digital Books and Magazines. Coming to iPad, April 2010.

Based in San Francisco, already available as a slick-looking iPhone app and offering up over 50,000 digital magazines and books, Zinioâ„¢ is an online repository of digital content, available when you want it via a monthly or annual subscription.

By now, we all know Apple’s tablet computer, the iPad, will be shipping with new Apple designed e-book software dubbed by the company as “iBooks” .. but many industry analysts believe digital content is set to go further on this device, than it ever has before.

A few months ago, WIRED Magazine was quick to show off what they believed the next generation of digital publishing would look like, demoing a touch-enabled version of their publication. The demo soon hit the mainstream media and spread like wild-life. It was clear this was seen as the future of digital publishing.

A few weeks back, Zinioâ„¢ also announced via an official press release that alongside bringing sports content to all platforms it currently supports, the Zinioâ„¢ catalog would be arriving on the iPad – this April. The service offers well known publications such as Macworld, National Geographic, Viv Magazine, Dwell, Reader’s Digest, PC World and more, all under one roof. When visiting the iPad section of the company’s official site, there is little information in the way of how the app will work, however the slogan does seem to house a few clues.

“Featuring new interactive iPad editions for top titles and access to thousands of magazines from around the world.”

An even bigger hint, would be in the form of Zinio’s recently launched brand ‘Zinio Interactive‘. The tag-line? Magazines that move. We’re betting this is the Zinio’s line of new iPad-specific content.

It’s still unclear if this iPad version of Zinioâ„¢ will be available outside of the US. Currently, the iPhone version of the software is only available on iTunes US .. probably due to content deals.

As a regular user of the iPhone version, I personally can’t wait to see what Zinio bring to the iPad and the future of digital publishing. We’ll be sure to get in touch with the guys and girls at Zinioâ„¢ and bring you a full review of the iPad version of the software soon – Stay tuned!

Well, another Magazine Store… Why everybody wants to have their own store to distribute content… On the iPhone, there is so many books disguised in applications…. Now, will every magazine have their own app in order to be on the iPad ? Did Apple messed up with his iBookStore ?

While I agree mostly with what you're saying, that the App Store is already cluttered with individual digital content distribution systems and publications, I think its a good move to introduce an alternative to Apple's iBookstore.

Having a few good, polished alternative stores (providing they're approved) would not only keep Apple on its toes with iBooks, but would offer an extension to content available. As a understand it the iBookstore will only offer up books, whereas some of these other solutions are including magazine content .. which I personally can't wait to see where that goes.

I'm talking about the 'Store' aspect here. I believe if you're going to distribute publications, it should be through one application with a store interface, not hundreds of thousands of separate applications for each publication – that's just silly.

I wonder if Apple will ask iPhone dev to move their books apps to the iPad or else..
