ABC Player Gets Updated to Support Streaming Over 3G. Now Also Works In Landscape Orientation.

@MacRumors is today reporting that ABC Player has been updated to allow streaming over 3G.

The update comes as new owners of the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G which went on sale in the US towards the beginning of last week were dismayed to find AT&T were disallowing streaming of TV show content from the ABC Player app, over its 3G networks. Apparently, ABC did look into providing the technology in their iPad app, however it was a last minute decision not to include it in the final version.

Due to the outcry from users though, ABC apparently spoke to Silicon Alley Insider yesterday stating an update with support for streaming over 3G was on the way:

Good news, iPad 3G owners: ABC’s iPad app will support 3G video streaming in a new update to the app, according to a person familiar with the matter. The app has already been submitted to Apple, and pending approval — which ABC should get — it will be available for download.

Well, it seems Apple didn’t waste any time getting it approved, with the app today being available for download on the App Store. Not only does this update add the ability to stream shows over a 3G network, but the app also supports landscape mode for viewing it’s menus. Previously, the app only supported this orientation when actually watching content.

I tested out the revised ABC Player app last night. The 3G streaming looked great. The other networks have a high bar to shoot for.
