If you were following the original announcement of the iPad in January, or indeed the US launch last week, you will have noticed that the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G takes a different type of 3G SIM card. Many believed this was Apple’s way of preventing or putting off international buyers from importing the device, but fear not! – What Apple didn’t account for was just how easy it is to take a normal SIM card .. and well, chop it in half.
@Engadget today details the success of one such Londoner, John Benson, who successfully managed to turn his normal every day vodaphone SIM card, into a Micro 3G SIM.
The secret? – A chef knife and a pair of everyday scissors. Yep, he simply cut off the top half of the card placing a horizontal cut just above half way, and then took a pair of scissors and chopped off the top left hand corner – Wahlah! .. a brand spanking new Micro SIM.
Engadget says Benson was able to do this due to the electrical components in both a normal SIM card and the required Micro SIM cards, being the same.
The 3FF (Micro) SIMs and the bulkier original ones are electrically identical, so there’s no threat of harm by using them interchangeably, though we can’t say the same thing about the tools that get you there. As always, we advise trying to rope someone else into doing the work for you — less chance of hurting yourself that way.
