So… How Many Times Can You Actually Fold an iPhone Duo?

There’s one number Apple hasn’t given us about the iPhone Duo.

How many times can you fold it?

We now know an awful lot about the thing. Apple has talked about the titanium frame, the ultra-thin design, the carefully engineered hinge and the layers that make up the flexible display. The hinge itself contains more than 100 components, which is a slightly ridiculous amount of engineering for something whose main job is basically: open, close, repeat.

But there’s no official fold-count figure.

No 100,000 folds.
No 200,000.
No 500,000.

Nothing.

That’s particularly interesting because fold durability is probably the first question most people will have when they pick up an iPhone Duo. With a normal iPhone, you don’t really think about how many times you’ve opened it. With this thing, every single use involves a mechanical movement.

Open it to check a notification.

Close it.

Open it to watch something.

Close it.

Open it again because you forgot what you were doing.

You get the idea.

Apple clearly believes the Duo is ready for everyday life. The company has put an enormous amount of work into the hinge and display, and it has repeatedly highlighted the durability of the design.

It just hasn’t put a number on it.

And perhaps that’s deliberate.

A laboratory fold-cycle number doesn’t necessarily tell you what happens after years of dust, temperature changes, accidental knocks and the thousands of slightly different ways humans will actually use the phone.

Still, I would absolutely love to know what happened behind the scenes.

Did Apple fold prototypes hundreds of thousands of times? — Millions? Did engineers deliberately try to destroy them? How many survived? What eventually failed first — the hinge, the display, or something completely unexpected?

Those are the kinds of details that make Apple’s hardware engineering so fascinating.

For now, though, the official answer is simply that: Apple hasn’t told us.

So if anyone at Apple is reading this…
