Meltdown – Radioactive Platformer

Chillingo have really got off to a good start this year with fantastic releases such as Guerrilla Bob and Cogs. Seeing a new release priced at 59p by Chillingo gets me excited every time and I bought this one with no questions asked. I’m glad I did because now I can tell you readers how good it is and to purchase it.

You play a safety control robot called Emgee. You work inside in the ageing, rusty core reactors that are too dangerous for humans to work. Your legs won’t stop moving, however your powerful jump ability is still working. You charge up your jump ability by touching the screen. The longer you charge, the higher you jump. After the first couple of reactors you gain the ability the “thrust”. This is done by jumping, then whilst in mid-air charging your thrust by touching the screen then releasing. The more you charge the more thrust power you have.

The aim of the game is to press all of the large red buttons to shut down the reactor and avoid a meltdown. You have a limited amount of time to do this. At first it doesn’t matter which of the red buttons you press first, but as the game progresses you are asked to press them in a specific order.

Each nuclear power station has five reactors. You must make two out of the five safe, other wise the power station will explode and it’s game over. Each level has a different completion time, this also depends whether you are playing the game on easy or hard mode. The faster you complete a reactor, the greater the score for that level. Time can be extended by collecting green cooling rods to cool the reactor (usually found in hidden parts of the level). Each rod adds 5 seconds to the end of your time. Once the rods have all been used up, you will need to collect more, although you get a number of rods as a bonus for completing each power station. Throughout the game there are various obstacles to avoid e.g Electric currents, radioactive gremlins & vats of reactor coolant which will return you back to the beginning of the level without your time back.

As with a number of Chillingo’s recent releases, the game boasts Crystal online leader-boards & achievements. I’m currently ranking 3rd globally on easy mode. I challenge you to beat my score.

The controls can get quite frustrating at times, trying again and again to jump that platform! A lot of patience is needed and you can feel a bit  “rushed” which sometimes interputs your concentration. After playing the game again and again, it gets easier as you know what each level is like. The graphics are wonderful for this type of game, They are very smooth, colourful and well polished. No complaints there. The music and the sound effects are very good also, especially the Geiger counter noise when your times up which I love.

The levels get increasing more difficult as you progress through the game, with 100 levels, I do believe that it’s going to take a while before I can complete every power station (even on easy mode!) So the challenge is there. This game is likely to keep anyone occupied for a long time, as it gets very addictive.

For the small price of 59p/$0.99, The game is incredibly good value, fun, addictive and feature packed. This game is great for kids, and will keep them quiet for a while. I have no hesitation in recommending this game, and at the small price tag, it won’t dent your wallet.

Give it a go…
