Enable Adobe Flash Content on iPhone, with Smokescreen

Still in its development stages, Chris Smoak has created a web-based plugin entitled Smokescreen which when released claims to allow both iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users to run Adobe Flash content within Mobile Safari.

The plugin, which runs entirely in the browser, reads the flash file’s binary, unzips it and then converts it into JavaScript, therefore not requiring the use of Adobe’s official Flash plugin, which Apple so desperately wants to avoid on its platform(s).

Simon Willison explains how the plugin works below:

“It runs entirely in the browser, reads in SWF binaries, unzips them (in native JS), extracts images and embedded audio and turns them in to base64 encoded data:uris, then stitches the vector graphics back together as animated SVG.”

Exciting news for those who just can’t live without the web-standard, not so much for Apple.
