Your GPS Location Is No Longer Confined to Generic Maps

Your current GPS location on a map. Old news, right? Most definitely. But your current GPS location on a map of your choice? Now that’s pretty exciting.

Released a few weeks ago, a new application created by FogTechnologies dubbed ‘Snap + Map’ allows users not only to track their current location using iPhone OS’ built-in location services, but also lets you choose which map image you want to use.

For example, say you’re at college and instead of opening @Google Maps and getting a generic map image, you’d rather see where you are on a map provided by the college. Well now, you can. The app allows you to take a photo via the iPhone’s camera, and then overlay your current location data on top of that photo.

By superimposing your GPS location onto a user-defined map, either downloaded in the form of a PDF or from a picture taken with the iPhone’s camera, the app calibrates the iPhone’s GPS receiver with the map by asking you to enter your current location, then move a short distance and enter it again. Of course, much of this app’s usefulness depends on the iPhone’s somewhat spotty GPS capabilities.

An interesting idea we’d like to see developed some more. Who knows where this could go in the future!

Snap + Map is yours for just $1.99.
