Rapid Review: Out of My Way for iPhone

On Friday, I was given a copy of ‘Out of my Way’ for iPhone and iPod touch. A new logical puzzler which tests your spacial awareness, logic and puzzle-solving capabilities …

The Aim of the Game
Out of My Way [App Store] designed by Michael Rutman, is a cleverly thought out puzzler combining two things, spacial awareness and logic. You are a ship in the southern quadrant of space, you have three opponents situated in the north, east, and west quadrants. Your mission is to reach the north quadrant by enticing your enemies to leave their docking stations. On the way you must observe their automatic motion paths in order to avoid a collision.

Gameplay
Even have one of those retro programmable robots in primary school? – You know the one’s – well the game play of Out of my Way is very similar and I have to say, quite addictive. The game requires you to input the electronic path of separate moves you wish to follow, by using various direction commands, and then the aim is not to crash while following that path when you hit run, until your safe. To reset the board, hit ‘Reset’.

Visuals
I’m not going to lie, that graphics on this title could be enhanced. Although they are ‘ok’ as they are, and they don’t affect game play in the slightest, I’d like to see Rutman possibly enhance the graphics in the same way as Bridger Maxwell did with his puzzler Lumen, when it moved from version 1.0 to version 2.0

Price Point
Out of My Way is currently selling for £1.19. Again, not low enough for maybe an impulse buyer, but still a relatively low figure. I still think most customers would have to think twice before dropping that, but for the re-play value this title offers, it deserves it’s price. The visuals on this title, as I’ve said above, could be gratefully improved, and due to the price, I’d like to see a possible ‘demo’ version of the game published with the sole intention of giving people a taster before purchasing.

Summary of improvements needed:

  • Graphic enhancements of ships and overall board
  • Introduction of sounds (possibly?)
  • Introduction of a playable ‘Demo’

Overall
Out of My Way at £1.19 is fun, re-playable and more importantly puzzling. The game has a lot of potential, and I feel with the right graphic artist could be even better.

This title supports iPod touch (Gen1/2), iPhone and iPhone 3G.

Rating: 7.2/10 (Good, Improvements Needed)
