As a blogger, the ability to blog on the move is a complete necessity. I need to be able to post something, to this blog, when I’m away from my iMac. Previous to the launch of the native WordPress application, I had to login through mobile Safari, and use that. Horrible experience.
Now it’s much less painful, with WordPress for iPhone.
Brief Overview
Upon opening WordPress for iPhone, you are greeted with a list of blogs you currently have permission to edit. Each blog must be setup beforehand. This is done by tapping the blue arrow to the right of the blog name. The user is then taken to a screen were you can enter the URL of the blog you wish to edit, WordPress username and password for access permission …
Once setup, you are shown a list of all the posts that blog currently has published.
You can also see articles which are yet to be published (Your Drafts).
Composition & Publishing an Article
WordPress for iPhone allows the author or editors of the blog to compose new posts quite easily. The ‘Write’ screen (above) consists of 5 simple sections; The title of the post, Tags, Categories you wish to submit the article into, Status of the post (whether you wish to set the post to Pending review, Private, Published, Draft or Local Draft), and an area for your actual text or imagery of your post. As well as text content, WordPress also allows photo upload from either the iPhone’s camera, or it’s camera roll. When an article meets your standards, you change the ‘Status’ to ‘Published’ then select ‘Save’. Your article will be published live on your blog, for everyone to see.
Note: During my experience with WordPress for iPhone, it can’t seem to handle photos that well, yet. Alignment is skewed. I’d stick with text-only updates for now.
Preview & Security Options
The application also allows you to preview your post as if it was live, before actually publishing the post. Also to note, a post’s publish date can be changed, as well as the option to keep the post off record with the ‘passcode’ functionality (shown below).
What I’d like to see added in Future Updates
– Capability to view full WordPress statistics on-the-move
– Better photo integration
– Capability to edit widgets
– Ability to edit ‘Author’ Permissions
In Summary
WordPress for iPhone does what it says on the tin. It brings the ability to create, modify and publish posts to your blog, from the iPhone. But it is lacking. Photo uploads are sometimes messed-up or not posted at all! – Also the lack of statistics within the interface is poor.
Rating: 6/10 (Good, but lacking significantly – Awaiting Update)
