But I wonder how many people have heard of their latest development team 8Ib Gorilla? They are a group of 20 something developers charged with bringing EA quality games to the $0.99 iPhone arena. Their first attempt hit the I App Store today and I couldn’t help but pick up a copy to see what it’s like and give you a first play impression.

Zombies & Me is the name of the game, and the aim is very simple. Don’t let the Zombies get you. The premise is that Zombie’s are rising up to take over the world and you are charged with protecting your dear old Grandmother who is hiding in the house. You do this by leading the zombies a merry dance in an attempt to lure them to the randomly placed missile strikes. Get the zombies into the strike zone and they stop like a rabbit in the headlights whilst the missiles blow them to pieces, but don’t let them grab you, if they do you are stopped in your tracks and will have to tap frantically to break free.

With a polished looks and good music, you control the main character by tapping on the screen as to where you want him to go. This is a survival game in the simplest sense with no real aim other than to survive as long as you can and take out as many zombies as possible along the way. There are currently no bonus power-ups to help you turn the table on your would be aggressors but i’m not sure that this is such a bad thing, there’s nothing to distract you from the simple job of running away.

It does lack a global leader board, something which is surely a must in games of this type and the control method leaves you flustered at times as your own fingers end up blocking your view of the screen. I really hope that the EA let 8IB Gorilla listen to the masses and implement the global leaderboard and hopefully, but more unlikely, a second control method (I can’t help but think a joystick control would work so much better) as this would add that little extra to take it from good to great.

Many may complain and say that no division of EA has any right to encroach on the $0.99 indie market, but for me, this definitely scores well as a casual game, with that “one more go” addiction that we love so much. Ok, there are games out there with better implemented controls and that all important global leaderboard, but for £0.59 / $0.99 this is definitely worth picking up.

Current Status: Recommended

Reviewed at: v1.0.0
Reviewed on Firmware: 3.0
Download size: 6.2MB
Released on: 10 July 2009
Retails for: £0.59 / $0.99

Compatible with: iPod touch Gen 1 & 2 / iPhone Classic / iPhone 3G / iPhone 3GS (requires OS 3.0 or later)

I think you’ll agree that you would have to go a long way to find a gamer who has not heard of EA Games.
