What with the ridiculous theme, outlandish graphics and sound, but this game stands alone in an app store that is lacking a unique flavor.

The concept of MUST.EAT.BIRDS. is quite simple. Slingshot the orange blob that is our protagonist at the incoming birds as you try to protect your… cake. Yeah, it’s a bit silly. Charming, but silly.

It’s a simple idea, but the developers (Mediatonic Ltd.) incorporate fresh ideas to make the simple gameplay mechanic both an addicting and challenging experience. For example, ‘eating yourself’ (hitting an orange blob with another) increases both its size and multiplier. There are different types of birds for you to worry about, including birds protected by a shell, large birds that plummet through the sky, and so on.

The graphics and sound in the game are spot on. They give a very Japanese arcade style to the game. The catchy background music and sound effects will have you humming along. I actually yelled ‘MAXIMUM BAKE!’ once. Yeah. The graphics are very smooth, everything fits well and nothing feels out of place.

There’s plenty of reason to keep playing, as well. The game comes equipped with a ‘Missions’ and ‘Challenge’ mode, as well as an assortment of awards for you to collect. You can unlock both missions and challenges as you progress. I must warn you, if you’re not in for a challenge, turn back now. This is one tough game. If you need any tips or help playing, there’s a help section thrown in as well. You can always go back to missions and challenges to improve your score, or even send a challenge to your friends.

In conclusion, for .99$, MUST.EAT.BIRDS. is as fun and well-polished of an arcade title that you’ll get. Good for a quick fix, but an incredible challenge is there too. Toss in great graphics and sound, and interesting gameplay to boot, and you’ve got a great app on your hands.

Current Status: Recommended

Reviewed at: v1.1
Reviewed on Firmware: 3.0
Download size: 4.9MB
Released on: 17th Jun 2009
Retails for: £0.59 / $0.99
Compatible with: iPod touch Gen 1 & 2 / iPhone Classic / iPhone 3G / iPhone 3GS

At first glance, MUST.EAT.BIRDS. might… well, it might confuse you.
