And you know what? I haven’t had enough of them yet.

Developer Qwiboo has contributed to this genre with their first App Store title, Aqua Globs.

It’s simple: Touchscreen + line drawing games = just works. That’s how it is, and it’s not going to change – they’re great fun, and amazing time killers!

When I saw Aqua Globs in the app store yesterday, I bought it as soon as I laid eyes upon the screenshot. I watched eagerly as it downloaded, and jumped right into the tutorial.

What I learned is that the basic concept of this game is to join these glob creatures to create bigger glob creatures. There are three colours of creatures; orange, blue, and green. The orange and blue are the basic globs… You can join any two of the same colour to become a bigger glob. At this point, you can join any two bigger globs of the same colour to make them disappear and clean up your playing area.

The green creature is special; he is the wild card of Aqua Globs. He will pair up with either orange or blue to make a bigger creature.

Now, if you take a bigger creature and a smaller creature of the same colour and try to collide them, they will just go through each-other. Nothing happens there. But, don’t try and touch any blue and orange creatures together; that’s how you lose a life! (You have three lives in this game.)

This seems like an incredibly simple concept, but believe me — it gets hard, fast. The game has indicators (just like most other games like this) that tell you when a creature is approaching. The indicator is also the colour of the upcoming creature so you can strategize based on it.

One thing that I like about this game is that you can speed things up. There are three speed choices; 1x, 2x, or 3x. This helps speed things up when it’s getting a little boring.

See it in Action:

The Hooks

There is also a “Goals” system to keep you coming back. The three categories (points, games played, and time played) have four goals each, to keep you playing for a while. Not to mention some pretty neat statistics (such as total time, most creatures on screen, etc), which is always nice in a game like this.

I’m not a huge fan of the audio in this game, personally… It sounds alright, but I went ahead and unplugged my headphones after a few minutes.

The graphics, on the other hand, are fantastic. Aqua Globs has a cartoon-y graphics style that really match what I think the developers were going for with how the game is presented. The buttons on the menu are… Well, globs, and everything just fits and looks fantastic.

The line drawing is incredibly smooth, by the way. This seems to be a pretty big thing with games like this; comparing the line drawing to other games. It’s probably about as smooth as Harbor Master [App Store], which is pretty awesome.

All in all, for $0.99, this game is definitely worth a look if you’re into line-drawing games (and… who isn’t?)

Reviewed at: v1.1
Reviewed on Firmware: 3.0
Download size: 6.1MBs
Released on: 11th August 2009
Retails for: £0.59 / $0.99

Compatible with: iPod touch Gen 1 & 2 / iPhone Classic / iPhone 3G / iPhone 3Gs

There is currently a plethora of line-drawing games available on the iPhone and iPod touch.
