Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!

This week has been quite a busy week for me, with the start of uni and trying to squeeze in time to review games. There were heaps of releases this week, with quite a few very good ones coming out from the pack. While the Mario Soundboard has stormed up the charts netting Apple a bit of illegal revenue, I decided to stick with games that our readers would want to see… and ones which won’t be pulled off the App Store in a week or two. So check out this weeks pick, including games from Tapulous and Gameloft!

GT Racing: Motor Academy – $6.99

GT Racing is Gameloft’s attempt to steal the limelight away from Real Racing. Since NFS: Shift ended up being more of an arcade racer Real Racing has continued it’s dominance as the best simulation racer on the App Store. It is certainly an improvement on Asphalt 5 and probably a more enjoyable game. This game is definitely on par, if not better overall compared to Real Racing. What is still gets beaten in is just the whole racing experience, with Real Racing it feels really smooth and natural. GT Racing is really good but when you have to compare with the best it’s not No.1 yet.

Where GT Racing does win out is the extensive career mode and number of licensed cars. Real Racing left me wanting more out of the game, but by the looks of GT Racing I will not have that problem. With over 100 licensed cars and 14 tracks including iconic real life tracks and even rally tracks, there is a heap of variety in this game. Whether it is customizing the car, the game controls or the race difficulty, you will find a way to make this game suit your standards. This is an impressive racing title and is definitely recommended for those who are looking for more sim racing.

Riddim Ribbon – $2.99

Riddim Ribbon. The long awaited music game with the cool name. This is Tapulous’ first attempt at making a game that is moving away from their famous TTR series. This game is all about moving to the music as you tilt your device to follow a ribbon of music along the designated track. This sounds easy but it is far from it, with intersections, ramps, collectables that you need to jump to collect and extra special remixes. The remixes are the best thing in this game. Something about being able to mix your own song to suit yourself is such a cool idea in this game.

With this game being heavily involved with Black Eyed Peas you will find it hard to enjoy especially if you hate the band. I love the band and find the game a heap of fun, even if the controls still need to be tweaked with by Tapulous (Coming in a future update). The series is going to evolve like TTR with maybe free weekly tracks, special editions (Riddim Ribbon Coldplay anyone?) and much more. While this is early days, just as was proven with TTR1, Tapulous will take the success of this game and extend is tenfold. If you don’t want this game now definitely keep your eye on it.

Tune Runner – Free/$2.99

I believe this is the third time I have included what is essentially a free game (Eliminate and Touch Pet Dogs the other two). I included this though as it is basically a $2.99 that just starts off as a lite version. Tune Runner is just like TapStudio where you can play your own tracks and tap to the beat. In this game however it analyzes the song and puts the beats out for you, something TapStudio failed to do. The other cool thing about the beats in Tune Runner is that they involve drawing various shapes before they hit your Tune Runner and make him lose health.

This game is quite fast paced depending on the song and can be very difficult in parts (Especially when circles appear for you to draw). You get 10 plays of this game before you must either purchase more via DLC or pay $2.99 and get an unlimited amount of tries. The DLC payments are affordable and you get many plays, probably enough that you won’t need unlimited, but this is such a good game I felt like the devs deserved the $2.99. With a relationship between Tune Runner and Angels & Airwaves (HUGE FAN) who provide a remix of their latest single Hallucinations this makes for a spectacular game. There is no reason not to pick this up and try it out.

Heli Attack – $0.99

There was one very simple reason why I got this game to try. Not because it looks good or anything, just because it appears to be a port of the hugely popular Miniclip game, Heli Attack 3. Now this game isn’t by the developers of the PC title so I am not entirely sure whether this game is the real deal or not. I grabbed it anyway to see how it goes. The layout is exactly like HA3 and features 10 levels from the game. The only problem with this title is that the controls do not do justice for how fun HA3 was on the PC. In particular the virtual joystick to move the trooper.

We really needed to see a better control system as we just physically can’t be as skilled as we need to be in this game, particularly in later levels. It’s impossible to change direction and/or jump with precision because the controls are way to hard for this game. A more responsive D-Pad would be a better option. This game for me also seems to be dumbed down a lot from what I can remember from HA3 and honestly I was expecting a bit more. For $0.99 fans of the series should be interested in this title, but first timers avoid this and if you want to try the series go for Heli Attack 3 on Miniclip.com.

Other Notable Releases this week Include:

Heavy Gunner 3D by Com2US

Robot Rampage by Origin8

X2 Snowboarding by X2 Games

Daisy Mae’s Alien Buffet by IUGO

Giana Sisters by Bad Monkee

Doom II RPG by id Software

Eco Punk by Nitako

Stay tuned next week for the nineteenth installment of ‘The Week That Was’.
