The introduction of Push Notifications would revolutionize how this would benefit this genre of apps.

I must say this release is a bit on the “late” side as a majority of IM apps now have push notifications , but these come at a price, Beejive IM is £3.99 (on sale) and is probably the “King” of IM apps on the iPhone. IM+ is £2.99 as is quite highly regarded. With Meebo being FREE and having Push Notifications, I was very excited to give this a download.

Upon launch you are asked to enter your Meebo ID or register for an account. A Meebo ID is required to merge all your IM’s into one account. Account creation is free, done within the app and takes around 30 seconds! I’ve never used Meebo before so I created a new account.

Once my account was created I needed to select all of my IM Networks. I use Facebook and Windows Live. Upon selecting Facebook, I was required to connect to Facebook and allow permissions for Meebo to access my account. Once done, I entered my login details for Windows Live and added that.

The main screen is very simple and looks like the above-right image. You can see who is online and chat right away by tapping on the contact. You can add Eco-motions by tapping the icon on the right hand side.

So it works well, very well over WiFi. What about the Push Notifications? Well there is nothing wrong with the receiving push notifications over WiFi on both of my IM networks working almost instantaneous when not in the app. The apps notification sound is very clear and loud. As i think most iPhone user would agree, how do the notifications work over 3G and EDGE? Well, With WiFi turned off, it worked for me exactly the same, very quick.

The only thing which slightly disappointed me was sometimes you receive a message from Facebook from a contact you haven’t chatted to yet, it doesn’t come up with the contacts name, it comes up with their ID eg. 11444056. I can honestly say I struggled to know who actually sent me a message so therefore I couldn’t reply. I don’t believe this is a fault of the app itself as the same has occured before on other IM apps I own.

Also, I can’t find anything in the settings to adjust the “timeout” which means you are signed in 24/7 to Facebook or Windows Live unless you sign out in the app. This came to light as my friends asked me if I ever slept!

For the cost of nothing the Meebo app is sensationally good value for basic chatting to contacts. It will take me a little while to fully trust it over SMS especially on the go, however it’s a start, and the whole app works very well. Limitations include NOT being able to send Photos, Sounds, Video, and Geo-Locations. You are able to cut and paste links but it’s a pain having to exit the app each time. Any users wanting these features will have to pay for it with a premium app. But as a basic text and Eco-motion chatting it’s spot on.

I can seriously recommend this app as it’s free. Anyone who already owns a premium IM app need not bother with Meebo as the features don’t compare to apps like Beejive and IM+ but if you don’t have a current IM app then check it out.

Meebo appeared in the Apple event in 2009 as a featured software developer for social networking applications when the iPhone OS 3.0 was unveiled.
