But how about one more?

Whilst it goes without saying that there are some killer Apps out there, my three favourites at the moment are Tweetie 2 (obviously), Osfoora and Tweetings. Each app brings something different to the proverbial table but there is one trend that you can hardly fail to notice. These three, and almost every other client I can think of (with the exception of Fluttr) Relies on an almost identical design layout. Icons along the bottom to allow you to switch between your timeline, mentions, Direct Messages, usually an option to search and then a more button. whilst some (like Tweetings and Twittelator) allow a degree of customization, the odds are, you’ll never change the main three. Thusly, the difference between each App is starting to get less and less.

Well is it time for someone to break the mould? I really feel it is. The layout design hasn’t changed since I got my iPhone and discovered Twitter and it’s Twitter Clients. I had high hopes when Tweetie 2 was announced, a whole new client, built from the ground up. I must confess I was desperate for a change in design. whilst Tweetie 2 is undoubtedly great (out of my three favourites, it my main client when on the go) I was disappointed to see it didn’t change the game when it came to design.

More and more twitter clients are also offering full landscape tweeting, which is great for composing as you get a bigger keyboard. But for reading your timeline, they’re mostly useless as the tab bar stays at the bottom of the screen meaning you can’t get more than three or four tweets on the screen at one time. Such a failed utilisation of space.

Now, everytime I see a new client has been released I eagerly check out the screenshots hoping for something different, but nothing seems to be forthcoming. Maybe people are afraid to try something different, most new clients seem to be trying to get as close to Tweetie 2 as possible which means there is little innovation. I wonder how many people can name the clients in these screenshots, surely you can see the similarities here.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that no one App has everything, sure Tweetie 2 is most impressive, but it’s missing a few key features for me. The ability to see who has retweeted my posts is one, and scheduling tweets is another. This is why I have Tweetings, it’s a great App that most haven’t heard of, but offers scheduled tweets. If I want to see who has retweeted my stuff, I need Twittelator.

So, where am I going with this? Nowhere really, but is it not time for someone, anyone, to pick the best features of every app and put them in a new and exciting design layout, break the mould and give us that ultimate Twitter client so I can finally replace all my clients. We’ve taken the liberty of modding a screenshot of Tweetie 2 with what we want. The image is a little rough, but look at the extra space you could have for the timeline, utilising the whole screen. If done well, this design view would be great, and would finally mean that a landscape mode would make sense.

I wouldn’t want to count how many Twitter clients there are available in the App Store these days, but I think it’s right in saying that’s it’s probably more than we need.
