Hit the jump for more.

Intro

We have a brand new sponsor, Chillingo! Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!

This week has been all about GDC and a look ahead to the future of both iPhone and iPad gaming. Surprisingly enough though, as we have been dreaming about the fact that we will soon have Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Splinter Cell we received some massive titles this week. While some games were pre-arranged to be released to coincide with the companies GDC meetings, others appeared out of no where and have given us some great tapping to do! Classic ports, new games in popular series and a sequel to a very early iPhone game are all featured this week, go check them out already!

Kings of Leon Revenge – $4.99

You could call me a Tap Tap Fanatic. I own 20+ track packs in TTR3 and 5 more of the single artist series plus Riddim Ribbon. Kings of Leon Revenge is just another must have addition to my large collection, but unlike a few of my purchases I got this because I love the band, not just the themes and TTR series. I always wondered why Grammy Award winning Kings of Leon never had a track pack in TTR3 and we now know why. This game is the best in the add-on series by far with smoother gameplay and the best graphics easily in any of the TTR titles available on the App Store.

Kings of Leon Revenge features 10 hit tracks from their entire discography, but about half of the tracks are from their latest album which brought them worldwide success. People who aren’t really fans of the music should still get alot of enjoyment out of this game. The game is really smooth and doesn’t lag like I found with older Tap Tap games. The four boss levels are also the best since Daft Punk’s in Tap Tap Dance. In the description it states that you will feel like your in the music video and that is actually the case. For $4.99 this is a super game that I can’t put down. TTR and KOLÂ fans won’t be disappointed.

Street Fighter IV – $9.99

Street Fighter IV has been highly anticipated ever since being announced that it was making an appearance on the App Store. Apart from the odd trivia game and the two Resident Evil titles, Capcom has been fairly quiet so far on the App Store so hopefully this is their way of showing us that they have more good stuff to come. But for now though we have a port of the world famous Street Fighter series. I have never been a big fan of the game but I went with the hype and decided to give this title a go. I was surprisingly happy with this game, despite being a bit skeptical after seeing the screenshots.

Screenshots do not give this game the credit it deserves, you really need to see the game in full action to appreciate how good it looks. The controls also work really well for this game, something that has been highlighted as a possible downfall for this game. While the graphics aren’t as good, I found Street Fighter more fun compared to Gameloft’s Blades of Fury, a similar game. Fans of this game will not be disappointed by SFIV as this is the best fighting game on the App Store. Only if Tekken is released will there be a chance of this being overthrown in the near future.

De Blob Revolution – $2.99

I never purchased the original De Blob mainly due to unfavourable reviews about problems with the controls. I took a punt and decided to purchase De Blob Revolution after looking at the screenshots. All I can say is I am extremely glad that I did buy this. Instead of tilting your way around the city to paint the world, Revolution is all about saving the Gradians in a strategic puzzle type game. Your blob must work his way around obstacles painting a path and getting from the beginning to the end of the level saving as many Graydians as possible and not crossing over his already paintet path.

The game features 3 variations on this gameplay that must be unlocked by earning points. 5 difficulty levels can also be unlocked and every time you play a game the levels are unique for an almost unlimitless game. What makes this game so good is how the graphics are really good and there is no lag what so ever. Having colour on a totally grey set-out looks brilliant and I found no problems with this game. After playing De Blob Revolution I am pondering whether to buy the original or not. This is cheaper than the original so I suggest you try out this game first if you want some Blob action!

How to Train Your Dragon: Flight of the Night Fury – $2.99

How to Train Your Dragon is a name you may or may not have heard as a movie title for an upcoming film. The game by Glu Mobile know by the same name is based on the movie but uses the same game style as Glyder 2 to have a movie tie-in. The game is very similar to Glyder but has a few differences. Firstly being on a dragon you don’t need to rely on thermals to fly higher and the missions in the game are also based around the movie. The graphics look brilliant as always with 3 large worlds and cut scenes with dialogue help piece together a bit of a story within the game.

This game is quite a bit of fun to play around with. The missions create a bit more depth to this game but to me all these extra features wreck Glyder’s free roaming feeling. This isn’t a bad game by any means but those who love the peaceful feeling you get in Glyder 2 may not enjoy this game as much. While there is still lots of flying and roaming around to do to find crystals and other many hidden places, I wouldn’t call it better than the Glyder series. Fans of Glyder should pick this up if they want a similar style of play, but first timers should buy Glyder 2 first.

Other Notable Releases this week Include:

The Hero by Chillingo Ltd.

Pool Pro Online 3 by Namco

Bullet Skater by Bullet Development

Hidden in Time: Mirror Mirror by Big Fish Games

SpongeBob Kart by MTV Networks

Stay tuned next week for the twenty-third installment of ‘The Week That Was’.
