I recently told you about the ‘I show you 5 updates but really mean 97’ bug, and thankfully that is yet to show it’s face in iTunes 8.0. What has shown it’s face however, is a problem much worse than mere graphic misrepresentation.

It seems, iTunes 8.0 can no longer update applications, full stop …

I’ll walk you through whats happening here. As ever whenever iTunes gets word there’s an update for an application you already own in your library, it notifies you by pushing a little badge notification beside the ”˜Applications’ tab on the left pane. Now, at the bottom of your applications library screen (towards the bottom right) it will display ‘X Updates Available’ and ‘Get More Applications’.

As usual, users experiencing these issues click through to the updates, to be greeted with a screen displaying the amount of current available updates, and separate ‘Get Update’ buttons for each item, as below:

Everything seems fine so far, right? – So whats the problem?

After clicking to ‘Get Update’ and or ‘Download all Free Updates’ iTunes displays one of it’s famous ‘unknown’ error messages, which at the best of times, are as useful as a hammer without it’s head. They tell you nothing, usually. Surprisingly, this time it did tell me something, unfortunately it was lies.

Errr .. no .. I do own the originals to all 18 applications asking for an update.
Why is iTunes 8.0 saying this? – I actually own the files, take a look:

‘Main’ application files are the ones without the numbers in the file name. ‘Updates’ to these application files however, are identified by a number in the file name. (i.e Data Case 2 is Update 2, for application Data Case)

Now the error message I’m getting is (granted) slightly different to what everyone else seems to be getting, but this just shows iTunes 8.0 didn’t fix a thing regarding the application update process. The question is – When will Apple realise we are PAYING customers and actually start to deliver services which work? iTunes has grown so big in Apple’s eyes, everything now centers round it. I’ve talked about this ecosystem before, but it is just that, if something goes down, everything goes down.

Things I’ve tried

Re-authorisation of iTunes account

Force quitting and Relaunching iTunes 8.0

Deleting all applications from iTunes library (making sure to keep files)

Reset Permissions of Mac OSX Leopard

.. and nothing (as expected).

“Is that a torch I see there, in that tunnel?”
After saying this, iPhone Atlas recently posted a temporary fix for this problem. Basically they suggest users should (for now) users should update applications using their devices. Once the device is synced again, all purchases are transferred along with the updated versions of the applications – Not ideal, but it works.

If you are expecting these issues (or similar) with iTunes 8.0, or if anyone can tell me exactly why iTunes won’t let me download application updates for applications I have physically bought (and own), please drop me an e-mail, as this is getting very frustrating.

According to a few new threads emerging, it seems iPod touch and iPhone users are experiencing yet further problems with the application update process.
