Well, this is the app I currently use to keep track of classes and assignments. iStudiez Pro by Andriy Kachalo and Michael Balashoff is a school organizer, and I have to say for the most part … I love it.

Use this app to add all your classes, and your assignments so you can keep them in mind and make sure to get them done. It will send you configurable push notifications to remind you to get to class, and that you have homework to do. The application is quite well thought out, with a today view and a useful calendar. Let’s say you go to your calculus class, and you see on the board that you have another 90 problems assigned today. Just launch the app, go to today, tap on the first class, calculus, and add an assignment. Set a push notification if you want, and you’re done. Easy as pie, and definitely better than having to dig out a notebook to check if you have an assignment. The calendar shows the classes over the whole month, with paper clips showing assignments, exams showing as flags. On holidays, the day is blanked, and the day icon shows the words holiday instead of colored dots.

The first time you launch the application you will have a bit of work to do. You will need to add semesters and classes. The semesters have configurable Holiday options, so all your classes disappear on those days. Classes are very easy to add. Assuming you have a regular course, you can set the class duration date wise, and time wise. If your class has a strange schedule, don’t worry, the app can handle classes that only meet every fourth Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday if you need it to. After establishing the class schedule, set the type and icon. There are plenty of options, like Lab, or Practical. Add an instructor if you like, either from an existing contact or make a new one. The last option is to add the location of the class, meaning the building and room number. A life saver for some of you, I’m sure. Set a color for the class icon if you like, out of 19 options.

Now if you check the Today view, you will see the next class coming up .. or if you are already in class, the time left until it’s over (handy, right?). The assignments view can sort by due date, course or priority, and you can also view all your completed course work for the last three months or so.

Tapping the tiny “i” dot on the top left of the Today view shows the main screen, where Settings is available. In Settings, you choose some aesthetic options like whether or not the week view should show the week number. Here is also where you decide what the icon badge should be showing. I have it set to show me how many assignments I have in the next 3 days. Also on the main screen is something called Data Managing. Here is where things get ingenious. Tap on Send Data Backup to send an email with an attachment with all your data in it. If you delete the app, or switch iPhones, you can simply tap on the attachment in Mail, and it will launch the app and restore all the data. Very cool.

The application as a whole works very well, and looks great. The downsides I have found are that if you tap too quickly on certain things, the app will crash. Also, the default due date on assignments is a week past the creation of the assignment. Since most of my projects are due within the next three days, it gets tedious to set a new date for every assignment. I would like a way to set a default time frame, like ‘in three days’, instead of always a week. I emailed the developer, and they are working on this feature. Fingers crossed!

So … to wrap up, iStudiez Pro is a school management application which allows you to quickly configure your school year in a manageable way and keep track of assignments – and the push reminders certainly don’t hurt things. While the app did seem to crash a little, and some of the features within the app are deemed buggy, iStudiez Pro is a respectable management application for the average school or college student, although some of you may wish to wait for an update to fix some of these issues.

If any of you were not already aware, I’m still in school – and this?
