Today, we got the heads up from Daniel of <a href="http://www.zanura.com/index.php" target-"_blank">Zanura GP Inc, a Canadian-based iPhone development firm.

Consisting of a team of marketing specialists and software engineers, the company specializes in bringing applications and games to both the iPhone and iPod touch. Released onto the store on March 26th, their latest is iCab UK. A fairly simple app, iCab UK aims to help you locate the nearest Taxi firms by way of location data.

Here’s how it works. The first thing you’ll want to do is activate ‘Location Services’ under Settings > General. There are five tabs across the bottom of the app: List, Map, Favourites, Settings and About Us. With the last two being pretty self-explanatory we’ll jump straight to the first. The ‘List’ tab will show you 5 to 15 of the nearest Taxi services, based on your current location, in a nice clean list. From here, you can see how far away each service is from you at a glance.

Tapping the blue ‘More’ arrow beside each of the services will then show you the detailed view. On this screen the app displays a bunch of information per Taxi rank, including: the full address, phone number, other contact numbers (if available), the category the service falls under and any keywords attached to the service. Tapping the top right button will bring up a pop-up context menu which offers the ability to add the services to your favorites, e-mail the service’s details to a friend, text the service’s details to a friend, send the details to your Facebook profile or view more apps produced and published by the company.

Need to see where a specific service is visually? Tapping the second tab ‘Map’ will bring up a fully interactive map, without having to leaving the app itself. From here, the map functions just as the native Google Maps app does, allowing you pan around and see your surroundings. Your current location is marked by a red pin whereas the taxi services around you will be marked by a purple pin.

Overall, a useful app. During our testing the app seemed to find almost all local Taxi services and contact details were easy to obtain. The favorites aspect of the app seemed to enhanced the experience, allowing us to add the services we use most to a separate screen.

While on the whole, we found the app to be good at what it was designed for, we also tended to find other competitive apps offering more. Cab4Me, for example not only offers service contact information, but also a list of user reviews per service and an in-app payment system for purchasing your ride home.

A reasonable app, one which UK users will probably be glad of. There were no issues we could pin on the app, other than compared to its current competition the app seemed to be lacking functionality and as a result, priced at £5.99 seemed a bit steep.

Ever needed to find your nearest taxi service here in the UK?
