I didn’t initially order one because I simply didn’t believe it would be of use to me. I have my iPod touch (soon to be upgraded to an iPhone 4th Gen later this year) and a various number of computers; so what’s the exact point of this in-between model?

I watched Steve Jobs present the iPad to the world with hopeful eyes. It had been a few years since Apple had released a brand new device and I couldn’t wait to see what it was all about. Apple really have a knack for creating an absurd amount of hype for anything they bring out. I bet they would get many people buying a brick with an Apple logo slapped on it if they asked people to. Just like the rest of the iPhone community I fell in love with the iPad seeing it for the first time. I wanted one badly and I wanted one right there and then. The next day however the impulse purchasing inside me fell away and I could see the flaws in the iPad.

Unique way to view the weather on the iPad

First of all this was missing a few key items that you would expect to come with no questions asked if this was really going to take over from a laptop. The big one for me is no USB port for importing/exporting documents. If they are giving us the tools to create documents and slide shows then why not have an option to at least print them out or get them onto a Mac easily to do so? There is also no camera anywhere on the iPad which I felt was a bit strange. You have this huge screen to showcase all your brilliant photos, yet no way to take photos on the device. As all these missing tools and accesories slowly built up it was looking as if this wouldn’t be much use to me.

Check the stock market the easy way

Taking away all these options to be productive on this device I looked at what else I actually wanted the iPad for. The iBook store was an interesting one for me. I don’t read books but the options of getting my favourite magazines and newspapers for a cheaper price definitely is appealing. Being in Australia I can’t see magazines and newspapers hopping on the bandwagon straight away, so this would be something that may take a long time or even never happen for me. The fact is Apple doesn’t do enough for countries other than the US so it won’t be as easy for companies to get on board. Gaming was obviously the biggest factor if I was to buy an iPad. Gaming at twice the size is an exciting prospect when you see the quality of games already on the App Store. It now seems as if the best way to go is easy by playing universal or iPad only ‘HD’ versions and these seem to be getting great reviews. The thing is that hardly any games are iPad-only at this early stage and waiting until the 2nd generation device wouldn’t leave me without too many games. Music and Video isn’t really going to be used as much on the iPad, just for the fact that it is not as easy to go jogging with an iPad in your pocket. Video for me is also a tough one because a bigger screen would probably pixelate the movies, but I have yet to see this.

Real Racing- Twice as big, Ten times better

Now that the iPad is out we have seen and heard excellent comments about everything from the speed to the battery of the iPad. My opinions about the iPad have changed dramatically from the few hands-on videos, including Arron’s video of the iPad and a short time playing around with a friends iPad. My initial reaction to the iPad was ‘Damn this is slick’ as I was actually not playing games or browsing books, but photo editing. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to use the iPad as a means of editing my photos that I had taken on my iPhone. With just $5 of software we installed two applications that allowed us to take photos on the iPhone and transfer it to the iPad, then to be able to edit it just as efficiently as if it was iPhoto. The iPad-only version of Photogene gave a surreal experience that I didn’t dream of doing on this device. Eager to try more I went and tested out the Universal WordPress app. Having extra room on the screen made for a more enjoyable experience and I can actually see myself writing for Razorianfly on an iPad instead of whipping out the Macbook or desktop computer.

Photo editing made easy on iPad

I enjoy taking photos and writing blogs, but never have I thought of downloading Photogene or WordPress for my iPod. The main reason for this is because the device is just too small to be able to complete anything in a simple fashion. Just doubling the size allows for so much more potential, making this into almost a cheaper alternative to a Macbook. While it is early days and I haven’t had time to test out other apps, I feel like this is really going to be the selling point that continues the iPad into the 10’s of millions sold. Sure, the iPad has such a cool music app and extreme speed when surfing the web. Heck it even has the potential to run Gamecube, Playstation 2 and Xbox games on it. Apple will only get the hardcore fans in for these features because this will not be a casual gaming device, it is far too powerful to be anything except a powerhouse for big games. This device will sell for two reasons, being a powerhouse for electronically buying your newspapers/magazines and being able to actually use this device to work on instead of a laptop.

Books for any age on the go

While it’s not going to happen overnight, I can see this device turning into something that could very easily replace school books in schools. As more devs like Mobile-Pond release iPad versions of their apps that make them a pleasure to use, the iPad will become continually better as a device. While Adobe Photoshop is now never going to be coming to the iPad due to Apple avoiding Flash, so many more Mac and PC applications could easily profit greatly by coming to the iPad. On the Apple website I found more great productivity apps with E*Trade Mobile Pro to make checking your stocks so much easier and Epicurious gives you over 25,000 recipes with clear, easy to read instructions in the palm of your hand for free. Apple have also kicked off with their iWork series, but so many more of their apps should be brought over in time. Their iLife series would work extremely well on the iPad and they should really think about making more of a mark on their latest device.

Apple's Pages to make writing documents easier

iBooks is an exciting prospect where it makes buying books so much easier. Instead of lagging around 10 think novels when you go on holidays, you can purchase beforehand and carry around on such a slim device. As long as magazines and local newspapers get on board this will really give you no reason to go to a bookstore or newsagent ever again. I have yet to see what’s on offer but I see this being a year or two before we find the full potential of having this online store.

A cookbook with 25,000+ recipes.. for Free!

While the 1st Generation of the iPad doesn’t have all the features we need, it is an excellent starting point for Apple. As time goes on more apps will arrive and make this a much better device, as well as the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0. As excited as I am about some of the games that I will be able to play when I get my iPad, I am more interested in using this to do everything I want in my everyday life. Expect some great things to come from this device, it is definitely going to be a major player in all our lives.

I have not bought an iPad yet unlike some of the other RazorianFly writers.
