Dubbed ‘Spirit‘, the tool allows both iPad Wi-Fi and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G users to get a taste of the jailbreak lifestyle.

For those new to the jailbreak scene, the process of ‘jail-breaking’ your device (whether it be an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad) is the coined illegal process in which you break or remove the DRM (Digital Rights Management) system in which Apple originally puts in place, allowing you to run both unapproved and unsigned code. While jail-breaking provides both customization and functionality which has yet to be provided officially, the process has its dark side, namely app piracy. Due to the process removing the DRM system, users are able to circumvent purchasing software from Apple’s App Store, and instead use alternatives to obtain this software free of charge.

With the ‘Spirit’ exploit being as simple as one click, its unsurprising just how popular this jailbreak is becoming. But alongside its flaws it has some benefits. Firstly, as noted by @Viticci of Mac Stories, by finding and editing the info.plist of some App Store bought applications using the file manager ‘iFile’ and a simple text editor, you can make iPhone applications identify themselves as iPad-native versions. Other benefits include the ability to activate background processing. Using a free application called ‘Backgrounder’ from ‘Cydia’ (an App Store alternative), you can throw any application into the background, allowing you to effectively multitask.

Its worth noting that currently there are little to no Cydia based apps which have support for the iPad, however as the jailbreak grows, we should expect to see iPhone exclusive software in both Cydia and Rock gain iPad support. Just be careful what you install or purchase at this stage, as its a well-known fact some software could seriously mess up your $499 device.

Over the weekend, the dev team released the latest jailbreak tool for jail-breakers.
