A kind which doesn’t necessarily have that snazzy, trippy user interface we’d probably like to set our eyes on, but at the same time shouldn’t be pre-judged because of it. Boxx falls directly into this category.

Created by indie German-based developer Marco Althaus, Boxx is a beat sequencer designed exclusive for iPad, which has a fairly sparse interface but boy does it pack a punch. Simple in its design, the app uses a grid of 144 squares to allow the user to create various different beats and sounds, building up layers of these beats to create something quite wonderful.

The app at its current stage comes preloaded with a few drum and instrument samples for you to start creating your own patterns immediately. You can also save and load your patterns and change the BPM and volume settings.

Checkout this video below to get a little flavour of what Boxx is capable of:

The developer notes himself that Boxx is considered quite basic currently compared to its App Store competition, but stresses updates are coming which will further enhance the experience.

Upcoming updates will include:

– settings per track
– note length variation
– ability to record songs with a flexible length
– online sharing of your patterns and songs
– more instruments
– ability to download additional sample sets

Boxx is available on the App Store now for just $2.99.

Alongside the more gorgeously designed iPad apps, is another kind.
