With the recent devastation caused to sea life due to the BP oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th, Crisis Commons have took it upon themselves to setup a mobile-based data sharing initiative to hopefully further prevent disasters from happening like this in the future.

A free app, Oil Reporter for iPhone allows users to immediately report an oil spillage from their current location to the necessary authorities.

The app provides a series of questions such as “What Do You See?”, the ability to attach a photo or video (if you have a 3GS) to your submission, and provides a 1-10 scale at which you can describe the level of destruction and spread of the oil spillage – 1 being open water, 10 being very think.

The last button on the form allows you to mark the situation as “Urgent,” ensuring you will get a response in a short period of time.

Alongside the app providing a way to get the message out, it also allows you to track oil-related conversation on social network @Twitter.

While it make seem we’re shouting “Save the Whales!,” this in our opinion is a very handy app, one which we think, especially being FREE, should reside in everyone’s app library in case of an emergency.
