There are Apple memos, and then there are Apple memos that feel like they belong in a time capsule.

Tim Cook’s final note to Apple employees as CEO is one of those.

After all the product launches, keynotes, earnings calls, late-night rumours and those wonderfully predictable September moments of “one more thing…” — Cook has reached the end of his time in the CEO chair.

And rather than making the whole thing about himself, his final message is remarkably Apple in its tone: the company, the people and the work come first.

""

“Today is my last day as CEO of Apple.”

It’s a simple sentence, but there’s something strangely powerful about seeing it written down.

Cook talks about how much he loves Apple and, perhaps most importantly, gives the credit for his success to the people around him. He describes Apple as a place where culture matters more than anything that can be captured in an annual report.

That feels particularly significant.

Because Tim Cook’s Apple has been a very different Apple to the one he inherited.

He took over after Steve Jobs, at a moment when practically everyone was wondering whether Apple could continue without the person who had become synonymous with it. Somehow, Cook managed to make the company his own while never pretending to be Jobs.

And now, as he steps away from the role, there is one particularly lovely nod to the past.

Cook refers to leaving a “dent in the universe” — Steve Jobs’ famous description of what Apple was ultimately trying to achieve.

It’s almost as though the thread has come full circle.

But perhaps the most interesting part of the memo is what comes next.

Cook isn’t actually leaving Apple.

He’s stepping away from being CEO and handing the keys to John Ternus, someone he describes with enormous confidence and affection. He says he takes “enormous comfort” in handing the helm to someone as capable as John.

That’s quite a statement from the person who has occupied that chair for almost fifteen years.

And then comes the line that really makes this feel like a time capsule:

“I will miss this work in ways I can only begin to imagine, even as I remain completely at peace with my decision.”

There’s something wonderfully human about that.

Because you can be ready for the next chapter and still miss the chapter you’re closing.

Tim Cook’s Apple era is now part of Apple’s history.

The iPhone became bigger than anyone could have imagined. Apple Watch arrived. AirPods became ubiquitous. Apple silicon transformed the Mac. Services became a huge part of the business. Apple entered entirely new categories. And through it all, Cook was the person standing at the centre of it.

But perhaps the thing I’ll remember most isn’t a particular product.

It’s the moments.

The enormous crowds at Apple events. The music. The videos. The giant screens. The little jokes. The carefully choreographed reveals. The occasional surprise. That familiar “Good morning!” from the stage.

And now, there’s a different kind of Apple moment.

A CEO saying goodbye.

Not goodbye to Apple entirely — just goodbye to the role that defined an extraordinary chapter of the company’s story.

Cook ends his note by saying he’ll look forward to seeing Apple employees in his new role at Apple Park and around the world.

So this isn’t really an ending.

It’s more like one of those moments that, years from now, we’ll look back on and say:

“Remember when Tim Cook stepped down?”

And somewhere in the Apple archives, this little memo will still be sitting there.

A snapshot of the end of one era — and the beginning of another.

Time capsule entry: September 1, 2026.
