There are probably easier ways to introduce yourself to the world as the new CEO of Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A carefully written statement. A polished video. Perhaps a photograph from One Apple Park Way with a suitably inspirational caption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Ternus<\/strong> had other ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

On September 1, as he officially took over from Tim Cook<\/a> as Apple\u2019s CEO, Ternus quietly appeared on X with a brand-new account<\/a>, a remarkably minimalist bio \u2014 \u201c\uf8ff CEO\u201d \u2014 and one post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just one word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hello<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s it.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No emoji. No punctuation. No explanation. No \u201cexcited for what\u2019s next\u201d. Just hello<\/em>. (AppleInsider<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, frankly, it was probably the most Apple way imaginable to begin a new era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five letters. Millions of eyeballs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funny thing about the post is that it could have come from anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You or me could post \u201chello\u201d on X and, unless we happen to have a considerably more exciting life than we realise, absolutely nothing would happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ternus posted it and the internet practically stopped to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within around 35 minutes, the post had already racked up roughly 748,000 views<\/strong>, more than 31,000 likes and thousands of replies and reposts. (AppleInsider<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers then went completely silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, hundreds of thousands of people were following the previously very private hardware engineer. The post itself was pulling in tens of millions of impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in less than two days, Ternus has crossed the 925,000 follower mark<\/strong> and is well on the way to his first million fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about that for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t spend years building an audience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t become a social-media personality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t post a thread explaining his vision for Apple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t even write a sentence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hello.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And nearly a million people basically said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello, John.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something wonderfully Apple about it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The choice of \u201chello\u201d feels almost too perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has a long history with the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original Macintosh famously greeted users with \u201chello\u201d when it first started up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iPhone later brought its own version of that familiar introduction with its first television ad<\/a> broadcast during the 79th Academy Awards (Oscars<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, decades later, Apple\u2019s new CEO has effectively used the same word to introduce himself<\/em>. (jerrycards.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether Ternus deliberately planned the reference or simply wanted to keep things incredibly simple, it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, it works because<\/em> it\u2019s simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has spent decades demonstrating that a small detail can become a big moment. The right word. The right image. The right sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes, apparently, the right lowercase greeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cook introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is also something fascinating about how different this feels from Tim Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook became one of the most recognisable CEOs on social media, eventually building an audience of almost 20 million followers on X. His account became a regular place for Apple announcements, photographs, congratulations and glimpses into his life as CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His first tweet as CEO?<\/a> – “Visited Retail Stores in Palo Alto today. Seeing so many happy customers reminds us of why we do what we do.” – (Tech Crunch<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ternus arrived with\u2026 nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just \u201chello\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It feels less like a corporate communications strategy and more like someone walking into a room, looking around and saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight. I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that\u2019s fitting for Ternus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most of his Apple career, he was the guy behind the curtain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engineer. The hardware chief. The person who could talk about how something was built rather than why everyone should be excited about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now suddenly the entire internet is watching him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From engineer to internet phenomenon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an amusing contrast here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ternus spent roughly 25 years building things at Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His first day as CEO took about one word to make him an internet celebrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the strange power of Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment someone becomes the person holding the keys to Cupertino, millions of people suddenly care about what they say, what they wear, what they post and \u2014 apparently \u2014 whether they use a capital letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now there\u2019s an even bigger question hanging over that tiny first post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What comes after \u201chello\u201d?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because Ternus has already attracted an enormous audience before he\u2019s really said anything at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man who entered X with five letters is about to walk onto one of the biggest stages in technology<\/a>. Perhaps, even, in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s quite an introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first post of the Ternus era<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is something oddly fitting about the fact that the first public word from Apple\u2019s new era wasn\u2019t a manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t a promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t a sales pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hello<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lowercase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No fuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, that was enough to send more than a million people running to the follow button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this is how the Ternus era begins<\/a>, I can\u2019t wait to see what happens when he finally gets to the part where he actually has something to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
