(Lowyat.NET)

And it raises an interesting question:

Could Apple actually take legal action over this?

Accessory makers getting early information about unreleased iPhones isn’t exactly new. Case manufacturers need dimensions, camera placements and other details well ahead of launch so they can have products ready when the phones hit stores. The accessory industry has effectively built an entire supply-chain intelligence network around this. (MacRumors)

But there’s a difference between quietly using leaked specifications to manufacture a case and publicly teasing what appears to be an unreleased Apple product before Apple has even announced it.

That’s where things get interesting.

iPhoneIslam

If the information came from confidential Apple material, an employee, supplier or another party bound by confidentiality obligations, Apple could potentially have legal avenues available to it. Apple has also shown recently that it is willing to pursue disputes involving alleged misuse of confidential information and trade secrets. Its ongoing legal fight with OpenAI, for example, centres partly on allegations that former Apple employees improperly took or used proprietary information. (Reuters)

That doesn’t mean Apple can simply sue every case manufacturer that posts a picture of a phone-shaped case.

There would be some very important questions to answer first:

Where did the information come from?

Was it obtained lawfully?

Was the accessory company given confidential material?

Did they know that the information was confidential?

And did the company itself actually obtain or misuse any protected Apple information?

There’s also the possibility that some of what we’re seeing is based on information already circulating publicly. In that situation, Apple’s position could be considerably more complicated.

Still, there’s something quite funny about the situation.

Apple spends enormous amounts of time controlling the reveal of its products. It builds an entire presentation around the moment the product appears on screen for the first time.

Meanwhile, the companies making cases for that product are effectively saying:

“Yeah, we already know what it looks like.”

And with Wednesday’s event now so close, every new accessory teaser makes the eventual reveal feel — a little less like a reveal.

I’m genuinely curious whether Apple simply ignores this — as it has with countless previous leaks — or whether the sheer number of companies seemingly getting ahead of the announcement finally pushes Apple to do something about it.

Would you like Apple to take legal action, or is this just part of the fun of the pre-launch Apple rumour cycle?

Apple’s biggest product announcement of the year is only days away — and some accessory companies seem determined to show us iPhone Fold, before Apple does.
