There’s something slightly strange about this year’s iPhone launch.

For the first time in a while, you can watch Apple’s big September event, look at the new iPhone lineup… and realise the regular iPhone 18 simply isn’t there.

Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside its all-new foldable iPhone Duo, but there was no standard iPhone 18 waiting underneath them. (The Verge)

And that’s a pretty big change to the usual September formula.

So, where is the iPhone 18?

The answer appears to be: not here yet.

Instead of launching the entire iPhone 18 family together, Apple has split the generation across two different release windows.

""

The Pro models get their usual September moment, while the standard iPhone 18 is now expected to arrive in spring 2027.

That means the iPhone 17 remains the regular, current-generation iPhone for considerably longer than we’re used to seeing.

It’s an unusual move for Apple, particularly when the September event has traditionally been the moment where the new iPhone generation gets its clean slate.

Why would Apple do this?

There are a few things going on.

The biggest factor being reported is the current pressure on memory and component costs, with Apple apparently prioritising its higher-end models where the economics make more sense. (The Verge)

And this year’s lineup is already anything but normal.

Apple has the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the top, the existing iPhone 17 and iPhone Air continuing underneath them, and now the iPhone Duo sitting in an entirely new category.

Adding a standard iPhone 18 into that mix may simply have made more sense at another point in the year.

It could actually make the iPhone 18 more interesting

There’s an upside to this.

Rather than the standard iPhone 18 being the phone that gets overshadowed by a shiny new Pro model every September, it could get its own moment next year.

Rumours currently point towards a spring launch alongside other models, potentially including a new iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air. (The Verge)

That would give Apple another opportunity to make a big deal out of the more mainstream iPhone lineup — rather than squeezing everything into one September event.

And honestly, after an event dominated by iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and a new generation of Apple hardware, I can see why Apple might want to save something for later.

A very different iPhone year

So, if you were waiting for Apple to announce the regular iPhone 18 this week, you’re going to be waiting a little longer.

The September iPhone launch has effectively become a Pro + foldable event.

And that might be the most interesting part of the whole thing.

Apple didn’t cancel the iPhone 18.

It just decided September wasn’t its time.
