There\u2019s something slightly hilarious about seeing the iPhone Air next to the iPhone Duo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re both unmistakably iPhones, both built around Apple\u2019s obsession with making hardware feel incredibly refined \u2014 but they\u2019re going in completely opposite directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Air is basically Apple asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow thin can we make an iPhone?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Duo is asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow much screen can we squeeze into one?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And seeing them side by side really drives that home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iPhone Air<\/a> is ridiculously thin at just 5.6mm and weighs around 165g. It\u2019s the kind of phone that looks almost unreal when you see it from the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there\u2019s the Duo.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Folded up, it\u2019s obviously a chunkier proposition, because there\u2019s an entire second display, a hinge and a folding mechanism hiding inside it. But open it up and suddenly the thing turns into a 7.6-inch canvas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That contrast is what I find most interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air is about less<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less thickness. Less weight. Less stuff between you and the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Duo<\/a> is about more<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More screen. More space. More ways to arrange apps. More room for watching something, working on something or just having two things open at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, the video makes the difference feel much more obvious than a specification sheet ever could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can understand \u201c5.6mm\u201d perfectly well on paper. But put the Air<\/a> beside the Duo<\/a> and you suddenly see<\/em> what Apple is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One is trying to disappear<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other is trying to unfold into something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s probably the most interesting thing about Apple\u2019s iPhone lineup right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There isn\u2019t really one idea of what an iPhone should be anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s the iPhone that wants to be impossibly thin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s the iPhone that wants to become a little tablet without actually becoming a tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
