Apple has talked about the titanium frame, the ultra-thin design, the carefully engineered hinge and the layers that make up the flexible display. The hinge itself contains more than 100 components, which is a slightly ridiculous amount of engineering for something whose main job is basically: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arronhirst.com\/blog\/2026\/09\/10\/iphone-duos-opening-and-closing-animation-has-the-internet-going-wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open, close, repeat.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s no official fold-count figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">No 100,000 folds.<br \/>No 200,000.<br \/>No 500,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nothing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s particularly interesting because fold durability is probably the first question most people will have when they pick up an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arronhirst.com\/blog\/2026\/09\/09\/apple-just-made-the-iphone-foldable-meet-iphone-duo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iPhone Duo<\/a>. With a normal iPhone, you don\u2019t really think about how many times you\u2019ve opened it. With this thing, every single use involves a mechanical movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Open it to check a notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Close it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Open it to watch something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Close it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Open it again because you forgot what you were doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">You get the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Apple clearly believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arronhirst.com\/blog\/2026\/09\/09\/apple-just-made-the-iphone-foldable-meet-iphone-duo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Duo<\/a> is ready for everyday life. The company has put an enormous amount of work into the hinge and display, and it has repeatedly highlighted the durability of the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">It just hasn\u2019t put a number on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that\u2019s deliberate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"iPhone Duo hands-on\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qypQmnlFjNk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">A laboratory fold-cycle number doesn\u2019t necessarily tell you what happens after years of dust, temperature changes, accidental knocks and the thousands of slightly different ways humans will actually use the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Still, I would absolutely love to know what happened behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Did Apple fold prototypes hundreds of thousands of times? \u2014 Millions? Did engineers deliberately try to destroy them? How many survived? What eventually failed first \u2014 the hinge, the display, or something completely unexpected?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Those are the kinds of details that make Apple\u2019s hardware engineering so fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">For now, though, the official answer is simply that: Apple hasn\u2019t told us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">So if anyone at Apple is reading this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How many times <em>did<\/em> you fold it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s one number Apple hasn\u2019t given us about the iPhone Duo.
