Instead of making you rush to press the shutter at exactly the right moment, it watches for the right expression, pose, or moment and captures the image when the shot looks natural.

Apple

In simple terms, it’s designed to make the Duo understand when you’re actually ready for the photo — not just when someone happens to tap the shutter button.

It’s the kind of feature that could easily get lost among all the excitement around the hardware, but it says quite a lot about how Apple is thinking about the Duo.

Smart Take is built around the simple idea that taking a photo shouldn’t make you think about when to press the button.

You should be able to get into position, look at the camera, and let the phone handle the timing.

iPhone Duo waits until you’re ready and then automatically takes the photo – AppleInsider

Instead of treating the Duo as an iPhone that happens to have a folding display, Apple has clearly spent time thinking about how its cameras can make the experience of taking photos feel more natural.

And that’s where Smart Take starts to make sense.

The clever part isn’t necessarily that the iPhone can recognise what’s happening. It’s that you don’t have to tell it when the moment is right.

You shouldn’t need to keep tapping the shutter, asking everyone to hold still, or checking whether somebody blinked just as the photo was taken. Smart Take is meant to handle that timing automatically, capturing the image when the people in the frame appear ready.

That sounds like a small distinction, but it’s an important one.

Apple has always been at its best when technology quietly gets out of the way. Now you don’t need to explain to an iPhone exactly when a photo should be taken. You just get into position, and the camera adapts around you.

Smart Take feels like an extension of that philosophy for a feature that could make everyday photography much less awkward.

The Duo has to understand that a good photo isn’t always created at the exact moment someone presses a button. Sometimes people are still getting into position. Sometimes they’re looking away. Sometimes they’ve just started smiling. Sometimes the best expression appears a fraction of a second later.

Smart Take is there to connect those moments, automatically choosing the timing so the camera keeps pace with the people in front of it.

And rather than throwing a collection of complicated controls at the user, Apple appears to be making the process feel almost invisible.

@btonelli

That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give Smart Take.

You might not even notice it’s working.

You’ll simply end up with a photo that feels more natural, because the Duo waited until everyone was actually ready.

And that’s exactly what good Apple software should do.

There’s also something quite satisfying about seeing Apple apply this kind of thinking to the Duo from day one.

A folding iPhone could have easily become a collection of gimmicks: look, it folds; look, there’s a bigger screen; look, you can run two things side by side.

Smart Take suggests Apple is thinking beyond the party tricks.

The interesting question isn’t “What can we make a folding iPhone do?”

It’s — “How can the iPhone make everyday moments easier to capture now that it has this new form factor?”

That’s a much more interesting question.

And if Smart Take is any indication, Apple has been asking it.

The iPhone Duo isn’t just a bigger iPhone that folds in half.

It’s an iPhone whose camera software has been designed to wait for the moment that actually matters.

And honestly, that’s where the Duo starts to get really interesting…

The iPhone Duo has plenty of big, obvious tricks.
