There\u2019s a very real possibility that getting your hands on an iPhone Duo<\/a> this October<\/strong> \u2014 is going to be considerably harder<\/em> than just putting one in your shopping bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has spent years getting very, very good at making iPhones. But iPhone Duo isn\u2019t just another iPhone.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It folds<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That one little detail changes pretty much everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is now producing a device with a folding display, a hinge, a completely different internal layout and a chassis that has to survive being opened and closed over and over again. It\u2019s an entirely new manufacturing challenge \u2014 and Apple has never had to make an iPhone quite like this before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which makes the first few weeks particularly interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supply could get tight<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple doesn\u2019t necessarily need to sell out of iPhone Duo in seconds for availability to become a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It just needs demand to be higher than the number of units ready to leave the factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s a pretty good chance Apple will be cautious with production initially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first generation. The components are new. The manufacturing process is new. Apple will want to make sure everything is running smoothly before turning the production taps all the way open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That could mean a very familiar Apple Store experience on October 16:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDelivery: 2\u20133 weeks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then 3\u20134 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then suddenly you\u2019re staring at November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s where things get fun<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The people who have been waiting years for Apple to make a foldable finally have something they can actually buy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no concept video anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No rumour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No \u201cmaybe next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s sitting on Apple\u2019s website, complete with a preorder button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if the initial supply is relatively limited<\/a>, as is now expected \u2014 and curiosity around the first foldable iPhone remains at fever pitch, those first few minutes of preorder day could count for a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially if one particular configuration becomes the one everyone wants<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple will obviously ramp production as quickly as it can. This isn\u2019t going to be some permanently scarce collector\u2019s item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But making the first generation of anything is going to be a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is effectively learning how to make a foldable iPhone<\/a> at scale while we\u2019re all standing outside the shop waiting for one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 16<\/strong> might not just be the day iPhone Duo goes on pre-sale.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
