Many have failed by either, making the UI too over-complicated for it’s purpose, or simply pricing the application too high for the market.

Introducing Picoli [App Store]. Priced at just £2.99 (~ $7), this application delivers photo-editing for iPhone in a stunningly, user-friendly, clean interface …

Basics of the User Interface
When you launch the application, you’ll be thrown into the heart of Picoli’s interface. At the top you have the main controls. The plus button offers a few interesting options, and this is where you begin to edit your photos with Picoli. The ‘list’ button (top right), rotates the entire interface of Picoli to reveal 15 photo filters and effects. These include, Brightness, Sharpness, Saturation, Illumination, Contrast, Colour Balance, Sepia, Colour Dither, Night Vision, Posterize, Sunburn, Rotate 90 degrees, Mirror Horizontal, Mirror vertical. Some of these filters are applied by switching a control to ON/OFF appropriately, and some filters are controlled by a 0-100% scale.

Picoli also allows you to save your modified photos to your iPhone’s camera roll for easy sync with a PC or Mac. To do this simply select the plus button in the top left, and select ‘Save Photo’.

Examples
Using the same photo for analysis purposes, here are a few examples of photos which were taken with iPhone 3G, showing some effects and filters applied from Picoli.

Saturation filter applied at 100% (above)

Sepia filter applied at 30% (above)

Night-vision filter applied (above)

Each time you apply a filter to your photo you are given the chance to save the change, before you apply further ones. The user is given a tick or cross options panel. If you try to apply a filter without first saving your current one, Picoli warns that you will lose all unsaved changes.

Issues
Probably seen as not being a major issue to most people, Picoli up scales your exported photo. This means the original quality your photo had, at the resolution 480 x 320 (iPhone) is lost. If you like your photos upscaled, this is great. The quality loss is not major – as you can see above, but it is noticeable on a Mac or PC. I’d also like to see cropping ability added. Although, there is a workaround for this. iPhone 2.0 added the ability to screen shot by holding the home and sleep/wake buttons for a few seconds, together. Using this method, a user can pinch zoom into the area they wish, and screen shot the screen. This will save the ‘cropped’ image into the iPhone camera roll. Not ideal – but for now, it’s great.

Overall
Picoli is a strong photo-editor for iPhone, which offers a fairly large range of effects for it’s price. Requires more feature additions in future updates, and upscaling images should not happen in my opinion.

Rating: 6/10 (A fairly good application, with a few minor flaws)

App Store: Picoli (£2.99)

R-Fly

Since the introduction of the App Store, lot of developers have tried to provide photo-editing capabilities on the iPhone in a clean looking, easily navigatable user interface.
