Just when you though that alarm clock of yours couldn’t get any more annoying, it has. iAwake is just like any other alarm clock app on the store, the only difference being – this one refuses to turn off until you complete a certain logic based puzzle from it’s preset library .. Genius?

From my travels on Twitter, I’ve notice a lot of people think the iPhone’s alarm doesn’t cut it. The general consensus is that they generally end up missing it and then over sleep – well people, no more! iAwake will ensure your WIDE awake by the time you figure out how to turn it’s shrieking alert off.

iAwake allows you to set a normal alarm just like the built in ‘Clock’ app does. Opening the app you have options to create new alarms or edit the existing one’s you’ve created. Creating an alarm involves naming it, choosing a sound, choosing the type of puzzle you want to solve to stop the alarm from sounding and setting the alarm’s ‘repeat’ time (1-5).

You can select from a variety of annoyingly good sounds including; a baby crying, a cat meowing, a child laughing, a cow, a cuckoo clock, a ding, a dog barking, a dramatic piano, drive by, a goose in flight, a guitar, a ring, a rooster, seagulls, a steam whistle and two dogs barking. The app also has a variety of puzzles to accompany the sounds including; Arranging and rearranging items, Cats in the cage (WTH?), Colour buttons and Shake us Off.

The app works like this. As your chosen alarm sounds, the puzzle selected displays on the screen with instructions as to how to solve it shown in a iPhone OS pop-up alert. Once you successfully solve the puzzle, the alarm stops sounding. Let me tell you now, the sounds in iAwake are LOUD. Seriously. If you don’t wake up to them, there’s something wrong. Also (surprisingly) all the sounds used in iAwake are pretty high in audio quality – Not that it really matters because chances are, your probably not going to be wake enough to realise.

Downsides
During using the app I found a few things I didn’t like. Firstly, the app features a full 24 hour clock as a way of an little extra, but the thing is when I attempted to rotate this into landscape, the app crashed. Kaboom. Shamoola. Gone. Also the app isn’t that much to look at. It’s well designed as far as functionality goes, but visually it’s lacking. For an alarm focused on puzzles (for me) it could see more eye candy. Finally, there is no possible way to set a day for the alarm to go off on! You literally have to go and set it on the day, to go off on that day. Planning ahead just went out of the window.

Overall
It’s nothing fancy, and it definitely won’t replace the built in iPhone OS alarm functionality – not by a long shot – but it does offer a fun alternative to alarms on iPhone. It’s slightly overpriced for my liking, but Hey! It’s insanely annoying right? .. that’s gotta’ be good, right?!

Current Status: Need it? Buy it.
