Apple (Finally) Receives Design Patent for iPhone 3G and 3GS

You’d like to think that considering the amount of iPhone 3G and 3GS’ Apple has sold to date, they’d have had a patent granted for the device already, protecting the device from copy cats. Well, that’s what you’d like to think.

The fact of the matter is, they hadn’t – until today that is. @Engadget is today reporting that Apple has finally been granted design patents for both its iPhone 3G released in 2008, and iPhone 3GS released just last year.

Strangely however the patent filed is missing a home button. It is unknown as to why this is the case, but the site notes we shouldn’t be too worried.

Don’t get too hung up on the missing “home” button — a US design patent covers any device “substantially similar” to the images above. What that means only a judge can say.
