Apple has just this minute released the third beta revision of it’s upcoming mobile operating system, iPhone OS 4.0 (Beta 3) to developers.
While people are still sending in reports of what has changed or been fixed in this release, we now know for certain that beta 3 finally brings back the ability to take OS-wide screenshots using the built-in image capture method.
Alongside this, the ability to sync your photos with iPhoto has returned. Both these functions were previously disabled or broken by Beta 2, and many reviewers and journalists (including ourselves) who were in the beta program hit a huge snag as they couldn’t save, export or transfer application screenshots.
[Update] – As noted by @Viticci of Mac Stories (see below), the ‘Multitasking Dock’ in beta 3 now has a different look.
[Update 2] – The multitasking dock now has iPod controls and a rotation lock button.
[Update 3] – Rotation lock button in status bar. Physical lock rotation button coming on iPhone 4?
[Update 4] – Jeff contacted us to let us know that if you are still on beta 1 you must do a full erase and install of beta 3.
[Update 5] – As noted by @iSpazio, the background of ‘Folders’ has also changed to the new ‘slate grey’ hatched background thingy, as well as the folder notificaiton bubble now showing the correct number of alerts, instead of ‘!’.
[Update 6] – You can now delete multiple multitasking processes simultaneously.
[Update 7] – Camera works, and saves photos, however photos taken using ‘Zoom’ are not saved. According to @iSpazio, when you press to save the shutter sound is repeated 4 times, but the photo is not saved. The problem was reportedly only found to be an issue on the iPhone 3G.
[Update 8] – It appears the beta has been pulled from developer.apple.com. (Possibly due to flash rom causing overheating and shutdown).
[Update 9] – Tweetie, the popular Twitter client, is reportedly not working under this new beta. (Other reporting working with latest update)
[Update 10] – File Sharing options in iTunes have been updated
[Update 11] – The beta is back up on developer.apple.com. Was originally pulled due to SDK install issues.
[Update 12] – Now in location services not only does it have a list of apps but says with in the last 24 hours.
[Update 13] – An new animation on the unlock screen kind of a 2 step lighting of the back light.
[Update 14] – Developers are now allowed to access the messaging app from/with their apps.
So far, general consensus is beta 3 is reportedly much more stable than previous releases of the software. Updating as we have it.
