Just pause for a second. See that aluminum, slickly designed £500 device you now call your Apple TV? Well, it didn’t always look that ‘Apple’.
Already sold for $46, @AppleInsider today discovered what appears to have been a early prototype for the Apple TV we all know and love today, on eBay. The rare item was listed by eBay member macdeals, and on closer inspection proved it was authentic.
Dubbed the ‘Apple Interactive Television Box’ as first introduced in October 1993, the device was discontinued in February 1994, carrying a retail price of $2,097.
“A friend who is a former Oracle employee gave this to me in the late ’90s, and I just came across it again after going through some boxes that were in storage for 10 years,” the seller, “macdeals,” wrote. “Does it work? I don’t know. Back in the day, I kept it on a shelf as a conversation piece. It is supposed to come with a remote, but I was never given one.”
Since then, the product has transformed into the one we all know today. A thin, light and modern digital media consumption center.
