iPhone OS 4.0 to Have Video Conferencing?

If you cast your mind back to last week, you may remember we gave you the heads up on what’s new in iPhone OS 4.0 (Beta 4). Among the new system wallpapers and built-in tethering support for AT&T customers, the update seemed like a minor one.

But today, technology journalists @Engadget are reporting via BoyGeniusReport that OS screenshots have surfaced which the site claims to have been taken from a field test firmware for the next-gen iPhone which Apple is supposedly working on.

Weather or not this is iPhone OS 4.0 or a future software update is yet to be seen. What is clear however is the screenshots clearly depict a working video conferencing UI, suggesting Apple intend to activate the feature in the near future.

Boy Genius Report says the screenshot comes from one of its “Apple guys” and, as you can see, it not only offers yet more evidence of video calls, but video call debugging.

But with the iPhones current camera setup, it’d be pretty hard to make a video call, after all the camera is located on the back on the device. If these shots are real, this not only shows more proof of video conferencing being included in iPhone OS at a later date, but also that Apple intends to add a front-facing camera to the iPhone, too.

Exciting news I think you’ll agree.
