First reported by @TheiBlog, Sky Mobile has today received an update which adds universal support for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
The app which allows Sky subscribers to stream Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3, Sky Sports 4, ESPN, Sky Sports News and Sky News, into their laps is a clean looking alternative to the iPhone version. But all of this delicious TV content doesn’t come without a price, far from it.
In fact, due to the iPad specific version of the iPad being able to stream “higher quality streams” of these channels, Sky are now purposing to charge iPad users a whopping £35 per month for this mobile streaming privilege.
Hang on – that’s like paying for another iPhone, on the lowest UK tariff. What the hell, Sky?
Oliver Haslam of the iBlog had this to say:
“What I didn’t expect was the utterly crazy amount of money Sky was going to expect me to pay. It would appear those higher resolution videos cost a fortune to stream, as the iPad subscription hits at a whopping £35 per month! I honestly expected the fee to be around £10 a month ”“ a premium over the iPhone for obvious reasons.
How, though, can anyone seriously justify the increase from £6 to £35? To put this into perspective, the last time I checked, if I wanted to get Sky TV in multiple rooms, I would only need to pay £10 extra. That’s for ALL the channels. £35 for a handful? Thanks, but no thanks.”
As noted by Haslam, considering this content through the iPhone flavour of the app will continue to cost Sky subscribers just £6 a month, you can see how the company upping the charge to £35 is ludicrous. It makes no sense what-so-ever. £12, yes. Even £18 would at a stretch be fairly okay, but £35? – Heh, no thank you Sky.
