Pirate’s Treasure is out now on the App Store $1.99
We have a brand new sponsor, @Chillingo! Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!
As we start with the countless number of previews and posts about the new iPhone 4, we have had one final week of big game releases. While Prince of Persia was released, it has been pulled due to a menu glitch so it won’t be covered until it’s out properly. Luckily though the week was saved by a number of big releases and a few smaller games that caught my attention. In one of our last days playing games on a normal definition iPhone, why don’t you check out what’s on offer.
Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies II – $9.99
Shi No Numa is the latest map to be added to Activision’s successful Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies. It is available as a DLC pack in the original game for $4.99, but it is available in this ‘sequel’ for $9.99. What’s the point of this game exactly? Well for existing users nothing, but newcomers can opt to buy this game and have this map as a starter instead of Nacht der Untoten. The other maps can be purchased as DLC for $4.99 so if you them all you don’t save any money. If you need to decide what version to buy, this map is better so would probably be the better choice.
Call of Duty is unlike all FPS games on the App Store. Instead of having missions, the aim is to defend your position as zombies come through walls and windows to try and attack you. As you unlock areas and buy guns using points, the game slowly expands until you are overrun with zombies. Along with the excellent graphics, this game is also available to play via multiplayer either online or with friends. This makes for a fun experience and is the best online play for a FPS game, except Eliminate Pro. Pointless to buy if you have the first version, but a nice way to start your collection if you haven’t already.
Soccer Superstars – $4.99
One of my most addictive games I own is Baseball Superstars 2010. The game has managed to capture the boring sport Baseball and turned it in a quick, fun 2 minute activity. I don’t like baseball games because they take so long to pitch and swing your way through 9 innings, but BS2010 changed all of that. Soccer Superstars is Gamevil’s attempt at doing the same to soccer, while keeping the levelling up system and everything that made Baseball Superstars a great game. While this is a decent game, I wouldn’t say they have nailed it on the head with this version of Soccer Superstars.
The basic principle of Soccer Superstars works fine. You control one player through matches and your popularity grows as you win matches and score goals yourself. The graphics are the classic 2D style we received in Baseball Superstars. The only thing which I can’t grasp are the frustrating controls for this game and in particular how the pass and shoot buttons are set up. It is really hard to get off a shot and the ball seems to have a mind of it’s own as to the direction. This game isn’t bad, but I would like to see a tweak of the controls before I can call it a must buy.
Robot Unicorn Attack – $2.99
AdultSwim has managed to take free flash games and turn them into large money making successes on the App Store. After Amateur Surgeon, 5 Minutes to Kill Yourself and an array of other weird and wacky titles, why not help a Robot Unicorn? This game is similar to Canabalt as you have to jump and dash your way through a never ending level collecting fairies and stars. This sounds easy, but if you miss a platform or run into anything it’s game over for you. Luckily though each game gives you 3 lives to try and get as far as possible.
For a game that is only a free flash game with quite basic graphics, it is so. damn. addictive. This is the perfect game to just play for only 5 minutes, but after repeatedly saying, “Just one more go.” you will soon find yourself playing it for well over half an hour. This is such a simple game to pick up and play, but so much fun. I suggest you try the flash game out for yourself at AdultSwim then see whether you would like to play the game on the go. Sure when you think about it, $2.99 is quite a high price for this but you can’t put a price of the replayability you will get out of this.
Pirates Treasure – $1.99
It would be pretty safe to say that Chillingo is the king of dual stick shooters. With the original sensation iDracula and the cult hit Minigore and Guerilla Bob already, Pirate’s Treasure is in safe company. Guerilla Bob gave the genre a nice twist with something to achieve, stretching the game out to a full level to progress through. Pirate’s Treasure is more about completing goals like in Guerilla Bob but in a restricted map similar to the ones in Minigore. As you progress through the 50 levels you find yourself staying interested in this game, something that is lost in Minigore.
The graphics in Pirate’s Treasure are excellent and all the different environments are perfectly created. The game is superb at delivering an easy dual stick shooter experience, with anyone able to pick this up and play right away. Having goals to complete each level makes you change your tactic everytime you play. For example sometimes you need to look for coins or just shoot x amount of enemies. Once again Chillingo has delivered an excellent dual stick shooter that I would have to recommend to anyone who liked their previous titles.
Other Notable Releases this week Include:
Assault Squadron by Chillingo
HECTOR: Badge of Carnage Ep1 by Straandlooper
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Freeverse Inc.
Sigma by BigStack Studios
PrincessFury by Mo-Star Information
