Like the rest of you reading this, I was on the edge of my chair eagerly reading the live feed here on RazorianFly.com (so well done by Arron, congrats sir!). The pictures and leaks weeks before had shown us the phones design, including the dual glass surfaces.
Having dropped, and subsequently ruined, two previous models of iPhones, I immediately wondered what I call the Damage Factor will be for iPhone 4.
On Monday, Steve Jobs debuted the stunningly sexy iPhone 4, with it’s stainless steel ring-architecture similar to that of a PRS Hollowbody guitar. Capped on both sides by a luxurious glass composite, the phones design is as minimalistic as it gets with a dab of sci-fi here and there. While elegant and enticing, I have a hard time believing that the glass edges are chip resistant. They are merely exposed to the world around them.
Then Steve introduces the “Bumper” case. It looks great, with its rainbow of available colors, suiting almost any style out there. I still asked myself, will these glass edges be protected by the “Bumper?” Do they overlap and create a slightly rounded edge which would elevate the phones back or front off of the table when you put it down? Scarier still, the glass is just as naked and vulnerable as without a case at all!
Then came the price, $30?! For a plastic ring around my $200-$300 telecommunication investment? Say it isn’t so! To be fair, I can’t assume much without having one in hand. But you can bet your paycheck on us checking it out on launch day. There will likely be protection alternatives available by then, unless we are to see a sudden lack of accessory stock like we did with the iPad. Wouldn’t that be a kicker?!
